  • WSU Head Basketball Coach is a GREAT job

Combine the impact of the NBA rookie salary cap with the tremendous amount of NCAA MBB TV inventory required with the level that Marshall has driven the program and the result is that it is a much better job than it has ever been in history.

The honest truth is that regardless of what happens the best coach WSU could possibly have over the next 5 years in Gregg Marshall. Any other result is not ideal.

Having said that, it is always advisable to be prepared for every scenario and hope most never come to fruition.

The other thread has been trashed and taken off track. My plea is that those not interested in constructive discussion about contingency plans please close this thread and spend your time elsewhere. Hopefully we can keep this on point.

My top candidates for replacement should it come to that:

    1) Archie Miller: coached for base of $335,000 in 2013-14. Received two extensions and raises since but likely still far south of the money WSU could pay if necessary, Great pedigree, built team with players from multiple sources including maybe the highest level of rated HS players for a mid major the last couple of years. Has connections to Canadian HS pipeline...builds teams with versatile athletes effective at both ends of the court

1a) Dan Hurley: Guessing his buyout and extension just went up considerably, but was paid maybe 40% of Gregg Marshall for 14-15...Solid both offensively and defensively with defense being a slight major (similar to Marshall), fast paced style of play, forcing the opponent into bad shots and turnovers...the deeper you dig, the more obvious that this is the superior Hurley at this point in their careers. You don't need to dig very deep to see what he did at Wagner and Rhode Island is ridiculous based on what he was given. Dude is a flat stud.

I have more work to do to start to clearly delineate within the next group. All are excellent candidates with nice proven track record and solid upside. Prioritizing within for me would likely be dependent on interviews.

    Steve Prohm
    Michael White
    Chris Mooney
    LeVelle Moton

Small separation due solely on small sample size of proven results available

    Bobby Hurley
    Brad Underwood

Two weeks ago I would have also had Ben Howland on a list of candidates you have to at least talk to, but I'm at peace with that option being taken off the table given the candidates I think we can land.

Tommy Amaker is a more tenured option I might kick the tires on as I feel he has really grown as a coach over the years.

Not relevant at this time, but I think Bradley hit a home run for them as I had Wardle on my list to track and watch his teams over the next couple of years as a potential future candidate for WSU.

I highly doubt you need to go beyond this group to find the BEST candidate for WSU, but would love to hear others thoughts.

I know that many will want to simply hit the easy button and bring Jans back. I am a fan of Jans, but there is way too much to be proven by him at this point in his development. In fact, I would bet that same subset of fans thought it was stupid to not hire Boyle in 2007...solid hire, but not the best available hire as we all now know.

I'm not sure we have to take someone who has stagnated, but some of those candidates may include Tommy Amaker (as mentioned above), John Groce, Brian Gregory, Trent Johnson and Brad Brownell.

Tim Miles might be the poster child candidate for that soon, but it's probably a couple of years away.

Restarting the shot clock is certainly a trend for savvy, experienced coaches.

Amazing how this board can lack the ability to provide thoughtful discussion. The first poster at least spent some time thinking through what Plan B should be. I would have expected others to have some ideas that he may have missed or at least a good reason why some of the coaches suggested shouldn't be considered. I haven't had time to follow basketball outside of WSU near as much over the past few seasons so I was hoping for relevant cliff notes to be provided here.

As big fans we should at least make sure we are talking about the best candidates for the day a change has to come. I am just not ready to trust Eric with this responsibility yet:) I know folks here we consistently whispering HCGM’s name over a year prior to MT’s departure in hopes that he would be considered if MT ever left. I doubt it mattered, but you never know where an idea gets started. Could you imagine how things would have gone if we hired the ORU coach!!!

I think Rick Barnes would be a great fit. Show how successful you can be at Wichita State outside a P5 team. Keeps a tight ship and great recruiter.

I would not want to discount Jans because of the "Cohen" effect. Chris was a major part of building this program and certainly earned the confidence of Gregg. Additionally, he knows many of the players that will be coming back. So, should it be necessary, Chris should get just as much consideration as the other qualified candidates listed above. Lastly, I think Chris would certainly be loyal to WSU (sorry BGSU) and not look at it as a stepping stone.

Boyle would have been a solid hire. I think his record would be better at WSU than it's been at Colorado. Is he Gregg Marshall? No. Is there another Gregg Marshall sitting out there somewhere willing and ready to come to Wichita? Well, that is a big, big question. Jim Schaus hit a home run. I'm not sure even Jim has another one like Gregg up his sleeve.

By the way, Jim met with Gregg in Cleveland.

CLEVELAND — Much of the attraction to Gregg Marshall when he was hired as Wichita State’s basketball coach stemmed from the achievements he could list. A run of seven NCAA Tournament bids in nine y…

Announce Heier as Interim coach, then bring in Jans and turn Heier to assoc head coach.

Up GM's salary to 2.5M with an incentive of half a mil for every S16 appearance.

Your statement about not being ready to trust Eric with this responsibility is this decision is a discussion topic. But we do need to come to grips with the fact that Sexton is going to make such a decision if it happens. We won't know if he is capable or not until he does it. Jim Schaus didn't make any hires until Mark Turgeon, and the others at Wichita State. He was an Asst. AD at UTEP before that. I hope that Eric is the one to make a decision but he will be the one making it.

I do believe that one of Eric's strengths to this point is that he has a great relationship with Gregg. If he can continue to keep him, that'd be a home run. That's actually what I'm hoping for yet and until it happens I don't have to deal with it. By the way, you all have named a number of good candidates.

I have to admit it was the often scrutinized (by me) Doug Elgin that hit the home run. There's no doubt Jim Schaus was the manager that put Doug Elgin up to bat, but we owe a TON to Doug Elgin for Gregg Marshall. For all the crap I have stacked on Doug for not improving the conference when the time was ripe, I have to give credit where credit is due. His visionary years may be behind him, but he is an all-star recruiter -- at least on one occasion.
