    ESPN TV Ratings for 2014/15

    I found it interesting when @shox1989 would post TV ratings for Shocker games on ESPN last year. I think it would be good to track our ratings for this season since we have so many games on the ESPN family of networks this year. The source that @shox1989 used is no longer available, but I found another source. I will try to keep this updated on a weekly basis.

    Thank you. I was very disappointed when Son of the Bronx quit posting tv ratings. I am glad you found another source.

        I was just comparing the first four games of this year with the first four national TV games of last year. Last year's opening game against WKU on espn2 drew 265,000 viewers. So the Memphis game this year drew a significantly higher number than that one. The next three did better last year, but some of that has to do with time slots and the opponents. Last year the WSU-BYU game drew 502,000, WSU-Tennesse 562,000 (both on espn2) and the Alabama game last year drew 157,000 on espnU (which is an awfully good number on espnU).

          88,000 for the Detroit game? It was a road game, I understand that not everyone has ESPNU but I still have to think that close to that many people in just the greater Wichita area alone watched it.

            A little closer look at the ratings for the week of Dec. 8 - 14th

            ESPN2
            The Seton Hall v. Wichita State game was on the Tuesday of that week and it ranked 33rd on ESPN2 with 284,000 viewers. Below is the top 10 for ESPN2 for that week:

            1. College Basketball Columbia v. Kentucky - 1,064,000 viewers
            2. NCAA Football Championship - Chattanooga v New Hampshire - 675,000 viewers
            3. College Basketball Gonzaga v. UCLA - 606,000 viewers
            4. College Basketball Wisconsin v. Milwaukee - 584,000 viewers
            5. Sportscenter Late (Fri) - 521,000 viewers
            6. College Basketball Florida St v. Notre Dame - 468,000 viewers
            7. College Basketball OK ST v. Memphis - 445,000 viewers
            7. 30 for 30 Documentary; The U Part 2 - 445,000 viewers
            9. First Take (Mon) - 423,000 viewers
            10. First Take (Wed) - 423,000 viewers

            ESPNU
            WSU v Detroit was on ESPNU which was the viewed by only 88,000 which ranked at 27 for the week on ESPNU. I guess the Saturday morning slot on ESPNU is a tough one. Also, if I recall correctly this was the Saturday with all of the NCAA football conference championship games (think SEC conference championship) which would certainly impact the ratings for regular season college basketball games on that day. Here are the Top 10 for ESPNU that week:

            1. College Basketball - Utah v. BYU - 248,000 viewers
            2. Women's NCAA Volleyball Tournament - 211,000 viewers
            3. Women's NCAA Volleyball Tournament - 205,000 viewers
            4. College Basketball - Washington State v Gonzaga - 194,000 viewers
            5. Documentary - 30 for 30: Brian and the Boz - 182,000 viewers
            6. Women's NCAA Volleyball Tournament - 176,000 viewers
            7. College Basketball - Oakland v. Michigan St. - 162,000
            8. Women's NCAA Volleyball Tournament - 158,000
            9. College Basketball - Louisiana Tech v Syracuse - 144,000
            10. Women's NCAA Volleyball Tournament - 141,000

            Other notes:
            • The highest rated program for ESPN that week was the Atlanta at Green Bay NFL game with 13,958,000 viewers.
            • The highest rated college basketball game on ESPN that week was Indiana v. Louisville with 1,418,000 viewers (rank 11).
            • The highest rated college basketball on Fox Sports 1 was Kansas v. Georgetown (ranked 6th) with 354,000 viewers
            • UNI v VCU game had 157,000 viewers (18th on NBC Sports Network)
            • St. Mary's v Creighton game had 77,000 viewers (26th on Fox Sports 1)
            • South Dakota v. Creighton - 76,000 viewers (27th on Fox Sports 1)
            • Illinois St v. Depaul - 42,000 viewers (41st on Fox Sports 1)

              It will be interesting to see the ratings for the WSU-Alabama game this year on espn2. Last year's game on espnU drew 157,000. Games on espn2 usually draw much better than espnU.

                I found this years TV ratings for Creighton to do a little comparison to the Shocker TV ratings. Thru 12/13, 6 Bluejay games were on FS1, their remaining games were either not on Tv at all (available only on "Jays video" ) or on a channel that doesn't have measurable Tv ratings (like CBS Sports net). Other than the Ou game, the remaining Cu games have had pretty dismal ratings.

                11/16- Cu vs. Chicago St- 20,000 viewers, 11/19- Cu vs. Ou- 143,000 viewers, 11/23-Cu vs. NC Central-25,000 viewers, 11/25- Cu vs. E. Ill- 29,000 viewers, 12/9- Cu vs. South Dakota- 76,000 viewers, 12/13- Cu vs. St. Mary's- 77,000 viewers.

                The total for all CU games on TV this year is 370,000. To put that in perspective the Shockers drew a bigger audience in just their first national TV game of the year against Memphis (425,000) than Cu has for all of their games combined so far. The total for the 4 Shocker games on the espn family thru 12/13 is 1,138,000.

                Also being in a big TV market hasn't necessarily helped the nBE tv ratings either. The DePaul-Drake game on 11/18 drew just 13,000 viewers on FS1.

                      The ratings are posted for the Alabama game. The WSU-Alabama game drew 545,000 viewers making it the third highest rated show on espn2 that week. And the HIGHEST RATED MENS COLLEGE BASKETBALL GAME on espn2 that week.

                        The Shockers-Bama game beat out SMU vs. Michigan and Missouri vs. Illinois. Two games that were heavily promoted on espn.

                        The other men's college basketball games on espn2 that the WSU-Alabama game beat out (their overall espn2 ranking for the week is the first number): 4. SMU vs. Michigan 522,000; 6. Missouri vs. Illinois 471,000; 7. Tennessee vs. NC State 447,000; 9. NC St vs. West Virginia 423,000; 12. North Carolina vs. UNC-Greensboro 391,000; 16. San Diego St. vs. Cincinnati 346,000; 113. Utah vs. UNLV 114,000.

                            Some interesting stuff there. I picked out three to make comments on. I find it notable that WSU-Utah had triple the audience of UNLV-Utah even though both games were on the same network (espn2).

                            I also found it interesting that WSU-Detroit had virtually the same audience on espnU as K-State-Tex A&M even though the KSU-A&M game involved two p5 teams and had a better time slot. And finally the Detroit-WSU numbers look pretty good considering the time slot they were in. The Detroit-WSU game drew nearly a 50% larger audience then VCU-Cincy when they were in the same time slot a week later.
