Try to name any potential assistant coach that "doesn't need OJT" who can guarantee to deliver 3 5* recruits over the next 5 years.

It doesn't take a lot of training to teach a recruiter to tell recruits that they will be playng with 2 5* players who will be in the NBA - on a team that's recently had a F4 and an undefeated season, nd a national CoY.

I think the definition of "on the job training" might have some flexibility in there somewhere.

I don't disagree. He wouldn't be a very good coach if he wasn't flexible about what he's looking for.

      • I would assume (yeah yeah I know) that recruiting contacts would be a big part of what HCGM looks for as well as the other assistants "liking" the new guy. If you are looking at the potential of bringing 3 five star guys into the program that probably negates the immediate need for established contacts. I think the second part is as big as the first part.

        • Is there any guarantee that his sons would follow him here if he became an assistant coach at Wichita Stete. I mean at some point his sons need to start making their own decisions and not always rely on dad.

          • Is anybody concerned that there may be father-coaching-son problems with team chemistry and/or meddling parents?

Definitely. I mean, you might wind up with a situation where you have a son who the offense completely revolves around, who always gets the ball but never has to play any defense.... And who never gets to win any important games in the post season. :)

That wouldn't fly on a Marshall roster.

Hmmm....I have seen that movie before, but I seem to be drawing a blank as to where. It's on the tip of my tongue. I am sure it will come to me soon. :)

                    Concern annihilator: Play 3 5s on 5.

Don't mind me. I have had a very rough week. Uniquely rough.

Obviously, wherever they go they'll need to be the right parents and the right kids to avoid that. But a strong coach -- and Marshall is certainly a strong coach -- can usually avoid problems. The main reasons I'm not concerned are that (a) Marshall doesn't usually operate this way, and I don't expect him to start here, and (b) WSU would almost surely be outbid pretty easily even if he were interested.

We'll be fine whoever he hires. Marshall seems to be a good judge of coaching talent in addition to judging talent on the court pretty well.

                        • Any reason you think these guys are possible candidates, shizzle, or are you just looking for something to talk about? DeCuire in particular seems extremely unlikely.

These 2 are well known by our staff, have the experience to fill an Associate Head Coach role and are currently looking for work.

Other than that, just looking for something basketball related to talk about during the offseason.

                            • I'd be surprised if any of our assistants are given the Associate Head Coach title this year and I would be more surprised if we hire someone to leap frog over Heiar or Forbes for the role.

That would surprise me as well. About the only time an assistant is brought in as an Associate Head Coach from the get go is a HCIW situation (i.e. a Tim Jankovich at SMU) or where a new head coach brings his associate head coach from his prior school with him to a new job.
