Actually I think it had more to do with the Valley as a whole and his memories of MULTIPLE bids from 2006 that got HCGM's attn. the most ,,,, then we (the Valley) summarily tanked and struggle to get more than one bid in.

This is a great point, how much does Doug Elgin have to do with 3GM coming here. Remember the valley was a big step up from the southern...

Also, when do we start to say maybe its tie to replace Doug Elgin cause the valley has lost its way??
      Genuine question...

Imagine being an SIU fan for the last 5 years. Then imagine that stretch continuing unabated for another 5 years.

That's how bad we were in the 90s. Turgeon unquestionably brought us back from the depths of hardcore sucktitude, and he commenced the rebuild at a time when our facilities were literally crumbling around us.

He also had nothing but nice things to say and was very supportive during our Final Four run last year, including the nice family photo he posted where himself, the wife, and the kids were all sporting WSU gear.

I understood the bitterness in the aftermath of his departure. But why now?

          1. The thread is a baloney thread.

          2. No one knows for sure of the reasons that Coach Marshall chose WSU.

          3. I give Jim Schaus a lot of credit for both hires.

          4. I was a part of the Dave Stallworth faithful, during the 90s, and it was not a lot of fun. We are indebted to both coaches for a great run and with a great prospect of it continuing.

Everything happens for a reason. Turg was the right man for the job at that time. Give the man credit for what he did, but realize that everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and qualities and flaws.

Turg did his part, he played his role, and we should be grateful. WSU may have been a stepping stone for him, but keep in mind he was just as much a stepping stone for us.

I hope he turns things around at Maryland and enjoys success in everything he does.

most people expect Maryland to be much better next year. Even with the move to the Big 10.

2002–03 Mark Turgeon 18–12 12–6 3rd MVC Semis, NIT Opening round
                2003–04 Mark Turgeon 21–11 12–6 t-2nd MVC Semis, NIT 1st round
                2004–05 Mark Turgeon 22–10 12–6 2nd MVC Semis, NIT 2nd round
                2005–06 Mark Turgeon 26–9 14–4 1st MVC Semis, NCAA Sweet 16
                2006–07 Mark Turgeon 17–14 8–10 6th MVC Quarters

To give Turg no credit is pretty harsh, it looks as though it didn't do too bad. That is not a bad turnaround. Now the last year he was here, he went backwards. But to take WSU to the tournament for the first time since '87-'88, deserves some respect, even if his opinion is "for this level."

Hating on Turgeon is like hating on Moses because Joshua took you to the promised land. No Moses and Joshua is just some bricklaying slave in Egypt.

Does Moses wish he hadn't struck the rock? Undoubtedly. But we all appreciated the drink.

Agree. Some must not remember how low we had slid, for a variety of reasons. It was painful to watch; it was painful to be a fan remembering the once lofty heights. MANY factors contributed to the rebuilding, including Turgeon. I agree that his coaching/recruiting style may have limited his success here in the future; can't blame him for moving on. (He seemed to fit more with a "high star recruit" style that would be difficult for him to sustain here; I blame that on his KU basketball upbringing.) But, surely he deserves MUCH accolades for bringing us back up to National Attention Level, which was NOT as easy as it may seem now that we're there.

I wonder how many Mo Valley teams would like to have Coach Turgeon's record, while he was the head coach at Wichita State.

                      Just wondering.

I realize that CU is no longer in the Valley but I bet they would have liked to have had a sweet 16 run.

I was not happy with the way Mark left. But, in retrospect, we were much better than when he came. I was impressed with his support of last years run. I especially was impressed to hear he paid Matt Brauer's way to Atlanta to watch his shox in the F4. I wish him well. I love the way it turned out for us.

MT did exactly what we needed. Take a sleeping giant, wake it up let it loose.

Something his 3 predecessors were incapable of doing. MT was a good coach and I am grateful for the job he did.

There was no "abandoning," he decided going to Texas A&M was a better career move (and was most likely heavily influenced by his mentor as well). As far as the "I'm staying", someone that knows more can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure he had every intention of taking the Oklahoma job before changing his mind throughout the day.

Sure, Turgeon didn't do everything right. Taking a recruit to Texas A&M with him was a mistake, and maybe he was too down on this program at times. But he sure as hell deserves some respect for coming in here and turning this program around. We're in possibly the best era that this program has ever had. It's a time to enjoy the moment and love all the attention that WSU is getting; not to be bitter and hateful.
And were Turgeon to have stayed there is no way we come close to experiencing our current success. Wish him the best but glad for who we got in return.
