How much could it cost to just create 2 or 3 radio stations in Western KS? Power them up during games? Im not edumacated on the inner workings of radio, but I cant imagine there are too many signals to compete with. I know its prolly a ***** to deal with FCC crap, tho.

I've spent some time in radio and I would guess that 100% of western Kansas is covered by existing licenses. With the number of listeners available in western Kansas, those are not really pricey licenses, but it would still be cheaper to cut a deal with the license-holders than buy their licenses.

You're still trying to put WSU basketball into KSU country. Baker opens the possibility of doing that, but I'd bet that if there's a conflict between broadcasting a WSU game or a KSU game, that the KSU game gets the air time.

If we see an extra $500k out of this, I'd be very happy.

From where I'm sitting, this is all about being able to pay HCGM more in the short-term, hoping that we eventually get into a conference with a TV deal as the long-term solution.

Nope, WSU would rather show their games on a cable system that only reaches about half the homes in its own market because Cox pays the bills.

          It is a shame though.

I travel a great deal in the area supposedly covered by this map. I assure you everything has to be just perfect to get KNSS with any clarity at all more than 45 miles outside of DooDah. Yes, I have parked on a high point south of Hays and could catch a score through the static, but even in the Hutchinson area, it is hard to get consistent clear signal.

Hays, Great Bend, Garden City, even a Salina station would help going west. Those communities have several stations. Heck, I remember listening to 2 different broadcasts of a Great Bend football game by two competing stations. Going east, there are fewer multi station communities except up on the I-70 corridor. Emporia?

I was surprised at how little Emporia had when I did a search. I didn't go as far west as Hays or DC, but did check out and see a number of options in the Pratt, Great Bend and Salina areas. I may check that site again later today and see if it'll let me search more. There were a few options in Pittsburg, Independence and Coffeyville in the SE.

And I don't doubt that their signal map is a little off as far as clarity goes. Which is why having overlapping areas would be a good thing. I may even check the Ark City/Winfield area see if that would be an option. I know I have no power but it's fun to think about having a network of stations carry the Shox. And it's a good way to kill time when I'm not busy at work.

There are so many ways to listen to 1330 (internet, apps, etc) I am not sure why radio coverage matters anymore...

Because people still travel in cars? People may have evening jobs where streaming radio on computers isn't allowed? I wouldn't want to listen to an entire game thru an app on my phone unless I was connected to WiFi as that would consume quite a bit of data useage over time. Some of our more elderly fans probably prefer the radio to trying to figure out their phone/PC and how to get it. Did I mention people traveling by car?

And there's always the chance of someone flipping through stations coming across it and deciding to listen. You never know what that could lead to.

Radio definitely still matters for this. My grandparents just got Facebook. .. listening to a game on a smart phone isn't even in the ballpark of possibilities. My grandfather would spike an iPhone into the dirt within five minutes.

I always forget not everyone has unlimited data anymore, though. I will cling onto that as long as possible.

Cling tight. Verizon just forced mine away from me.

Listening to a game on the radio is convenient for those who work during games. Using an app to listen to a game is unrealistic for many many people.

I listen to games on apps all of the time while driving.... It isn't perfect for many of the reasons mentioned above, but it is ultimately more available than any radio station can be.
