  • Final Four run pays off for WSU

Wichita State may be in the early stages of the “Flutie Effect.”

Its basketball run to the NCAA Final Four last month touched off a high degree of interest in all things Shocker, including becoming one. Admissions inquiries and hits on the university’s website skyrocketed during the NCAA Tournament.

The “Flutie Effect” was named for Boston College quarterback Doug Flutie after he threw a last-second Hail Mary pass that beat the University of Miami in 1984 in a play so famous that it became a TV commercial for UPS decades later.

The real proof will hopefully be visible in the next two years when the ease and quality of our scheduling improves, when we can recruit a center who is not a project, and when it is no longer rare to land 4 and 5 star recruits.

On scheduling, I agree. On recruiting 4 and 5 star recruits - not so much. I am not convinced that we need to land more 4 and 5 star recruits. We just need to consistently land the best kids we can get that fit our model. Thad Matta, the coach of Ohio State admitted to the ESPN or CBS analysts that you really can't tell the difference between alot of recruits based o their star ratings. And to the extent thos kids are less team oriented, they can actually drag your program down.

Finding big kids who aren't projects that aren't going to Kentucky is pretty hard - even for Kansas...

      Scheduling: agree 100%

From all reports, Shaq Morris is already a big who isn't a project, and if he's a genuine 6-8 (and even more so if he has growth potential, as some have speculated), that's fine. He's already a good bit bulkier than Hall is.

Some posters on here are forever telling us that a 7-footer (or close to it) is essential to play against the biggest of the big boys, but how much of WSU's Final Four push was driven by anyone taller than 6-8? Orukpe was a specialist; Lufile played less than 250 minutes all year -- what kicked WSU into high gear was getting back a middle-sized guy, 6-3 Ron Baker, while 6-8 Hall and Early handled pretty much all of the inside work that was needed. So if the Shocks could get Morris even before making a dash to the Final Four -- and especially if they can follow up well this coming season -- they should certainly be able to recruit what they need in the post now that their profile has been raised.

The College game is simply following the NBA game. Bigs are becoming less important. How many game-changing PFs or Centers are left in the NBA? Six?

College teams frequently play one true post player at a time. That's how WSU rolled with Stutz and Ben Smith starting last year, and Anthony and Hall this year. I am not counting Cle as a true post player. He is a 6'8" guy how plays inside and outside.

Eight of the last nine NBA MVPs have been guards and the one non-guard, is Nowitski, hardly a traditional post player.

As a Life Member of the WSU Alumni Association, both the lack of response and the actual responses to this thread sadden me. It seems most "Shockernetters" do not look at athletics as a "window into the university." No, they think athletics are bigger than the university. "We don't care if recruits can spell "WSU", as long as they can ball!" "Coach Marshall says we don't want football, so we don't want football!" "Graduation rate? Who gives a &@#$? No "one-and-dones" but 30% sounds good to me." and of course, we don't need a seven-footer like Jeff Withey, a smart kid who could actually dominate in the Valley!

How come no one on Shockernet thinks about some high schooler that would not have heard of WSU but for the Final 4 run, and looks into the university? Students won't come to WSU just because they think the basketball team will be good. But a good basketball team will make them look at WSU, and the assets of the university will bring them here. I am truly saddened that Shockers would be happy that this Final 4 run will get us another juco (questionable student) baller, but not excited at all that some kid in Florida (etc.) may learn that WSU is a great place to study aeronautical engineering or entrepreneur studies.

You misrepresented someone's argument to make it easier to attack.

I 100% agree! Finding the right top 250 recruit is better than finding the wrong top 50 recruit. Get a guy that fits the system and works hard. The rest will work itself out. Finding a 7 footer that isn't a project ain't gonna happen outside of the bluebloods. Finding the right 6-8 post isn't that hard.

Scheduling up in the non-con and getting our foot in the door with the RIGHT top 100…that's what the final four should do!

It seems like most didn't read the article that thoroughly. It didn't have anything to do with how the basketball program is going to be doing in the future, but how Wichita State University is going to be doing in the future based on the success of the basketball program, which they called the "Flutie Effect".

The basketball program opened up a window of opportunity for more people to look into WSU as a place to continue their education. The basketball program (and other athletic programs) still need to continue to get better because, as the article said, “...basketball and athletics are the window to the university.”
