The two teams will eventually wind up playing in the tournament when the results mean much more than just local bragging rights.
The Shockers have bigger goals and expectations than getting a regular season game with KU. Forget about it.

I'm in the minority when it comes to loyal Shockernetters. My favorite college football team is Kansas State, I love Bill Snyder and passionately root for KSU football to do well. I won't say I root for KU, but if WSU is out of the picture, I want the state of Kansas represented in some sort of fashion and will simply root against whomever KU is playing.
My problem with KU is not so much about the university, it's their fans. They're condescending, paranoid and believe Lawrence, KS is the metropolitan high society of the state of Kansas. They still believe Wichita, KS is the South Central, L.A. of the Midwest, but they're sandwiched right between three metro areas whose crime crate per capita destroys Wichita (KCK, KCMO and Topeka).
I have many friends who went to KU and they all have love for Wichita State, but there are more haters from KU than those who show respect. It's funny, for a program who can't even be considered an in-state rival, anything that is posted about WSU on their board, it will undoubtedly be one of the longer threads. Why is that?

It's strange to me that people (especially Shockernet regulars) are still questioning why KU won't play us in basketball. The explanation is very clear and has been discussed numerous times.
In 2006, ESPN approached KU and WSU and wanted to schedule a prime time game. Wichita State agreed to do the game at Allen Fieldhouse but KU declined. That is a fact and makes KU's intentions clear. It isn't about money, it isn't about venue, it isn't about scheduling, it isn't about RPI, it isn't about anything other than the fact that they are desperate about making sure they aren't beaten by us. In other words, they are chicken.

The hate stems from 1960 or 1961 when Wichita University was applying to the Kansas Board of Regents to become a state institution (with the key being the state funding that would be provided) and KU did everything in it's power to block Wichita University from getting approval.
This bitterness between the two does not stem from a dominance of one school over another in basketball, or that one school won't play the other school. This is a situation that has deep roots in the very bedrock of our state's public higher education.

Why many Wichita State Shocker fans dislike the University of Kansas
I am going to provide some of my knowledge on the subject. I'm hoping that others with additional knowledge can contribute and this can become a Shockernet Wikipedia page for those who are uneducated on the issues. We can sticky it at the top so visitors - as well as new Shocker fans - can understand that the dislike for our instate brothers up north is not founded in jealousy or pettiness.
Wichita State has faced an uphill battle as a university in the state of Kansas since the very beginning. In 1964 Wichita State was included into the state system of higher learning, but not before having to battle it out with KU who tried desperately to block then University of Wichita's admission. After losing that attack, KU spent most of the next five decades avoiding playing Wichita State in basketball, save for several games during the 90's when the Shocker teams were about as weak as they had ever been in history. During that period KU happily scheduled the Shockers beating their brains in on most contests. Once the program's competency was greatly improved, starting in 1999 (coincidentally by a KU alum), many requests have been made to reconvene the series yet every request over the last 15 years has been denied.
Wichita State has also been continually attacked as an academic institution by the University of Kansas. In the 1980's, Wichita State was preparing to embark on their own medical program. They built the building, had hired the medical professors, and were awaiting final approval by the board of regents. KU formally challenged the Shocker's new medical program petitioning that the state of Kansas wasn't big enough for two collegiate medical programs. At the end of a nasty battle, KU was awarded control of WSU's new medical facility and voila', there is now a University of Kansas at Wichita medical center awkwardly close to the campus of Wichita State.
The attacks at stifling Wichita State's academic prowess aren't limiting only to the medical school, there have been numerous denials of doctorate programs at Wichita State over the years with the exact same program mysteriously showing up at KU shortly thereafter. One program of recent memory that was denied by the Kansas Board of Regents (led by a KU alumni majority for many years), was a new Shocker dental program.
Other incidents that have strained the relationship of the two universities over the years has been KU's penchant for blowing the whistle on Wichita State at every opportunity. The timing is curious because it has either been done during a great period of success in Wichita State's history, or when KU was losing recruits to Wichita State. The most recent incident happened when Maurice Evans chose Wichita State over KU. Roy Williams made it clear in the newspaper that Evans was making a huge career mistake and immediately reported Wichita State to the NCAA for recruiting violations. No recruiting violations were found.
The pattern is clear that the University of Kansas has a predatory policy with regards to sharing space in Kansas with Wichita State. They seem to do it at nearly every opportunity. The easiest is in athletics. Wichita State baseball has always been better than KU baseball yet Wichita State has always scheduled KU, undoubtedly helping their strength of schedule over the last several decades. In basketball though, where the strengths are reversed with respect to national reputation, Wichita State is consistently shunned.
In 2006, the year of our last Sweet 16, ESPN approached KU offering a nationally televised game between the two programs. The game would be at Allen Fieldhouse and there would be no obligations beyond that game. Wichita State gladly accepted the offer while KU adamantly rejected it. In the ensuing years the University of Kansas basketball program would offer excuses to the media why they can't (won't) schedule Wichita State. The excuse that is continually recycled is that KU would lose too much money playing Wichita State. This excuse flies well with the general public because they aren't aware of the nationally televised ESPN game that was turned down in 2006. It is quite clear to those of us in the know, that KU avoids playing Wichita State for reasons other than money. I'll let the reader make their own determination as to what the real reason is.
