I understand the rule. My point was that not only did he awarded points when it couldnt be determined that the ball was going down, or if the shot was even going to hit the rim.

If Ehimen were six inches to a foot closer to the basket the call would have probably been correct. Being that it was shot from where it was doesn't change anything about the rule.

It doesn't bother me a bit that he made the call with the clock winding down. What bothers me is that he missed it.

All of that is what made it a 50/50 call at best even when viewed on regular time. Slo-mo makes it obvious that it wasn't goaltending. On the other hand if the goaltending is obvious on regular time, it should be called. If it takes a slo-mo review to call it, it shouldn't be called and I think that was Elgin's point.

I concur and thought I'd stated as much earlier.

Oh, and I just saw a replay of the play and I don't see the obvious travels that others have talked about.

I could be wrong but didn't Higgins make the offensive goaltending call on Cle in the MSU game from the lead position?

That's what I saw, but I suppose one of the other officials may have called it and Higgins followed with his confirmation of the call.

He took 3 GIGANTIC steps, which is a travel. It couldn't be more obvious.

Are 15' layups legal? I thought that a jump stop should have been made. Your the referee and probably know the rule best. What is it?

By the way, when I stopped and re-read the entire thread, I noticed several times that things were repeated. Did you just notice it?

It wasn't even close to 50/50 call. Where Orupke was at, if the ball was going down it was a "pass" not a shot as it wouldn't come close to the basket.

Especially when such a debatable call determines the outcome of a game. At the very least Randall should have at least conferred with his fellow refs and asked what they saw in regards to goaltending before making such a dramatic and emphatic call. In fact, Randall should have received a technical for taunting the Shocks and their fans with his dramatics.

I'd just watched it from the Shocker Sports Report and there weren't three GIGANTIC steps. Gigantic or small doesn't matter. It really depends on when you say his last dribble finished. His foot was coming down when he picked up the dribble. Does that finished step count? And if you're watching it in live action can you distinguish if it did or not? And that was watching in slow motion.

As far as the jump stop question, when you're running like that, you're still allowed your two steps. People shoot runners all the time from 10+ feet.

Despite the goaltending call at SIU I think I would prefer Rick Randall officiating our games over any of the 3 yahoos that officiated the Drake game tonight.
