Don't be so hard on Cy. With only 1 eye, he probably just didn't see the line to shake hands out of his peripheral vision.

So much of his game is an intentional schtick, geared towards getting other coaches/players to act in a certain way regarding him. It's if he says, nothing to see here, move along. Why? Because it allows him to do all the things that we need him to do, without him being harrassed.

One thing no one has even covered yet is how valuable he is in getting the ball to Doug. Someone said in an earlier thread that Early disappeared for parts of the game, then someone else said that no, he was sealing his man down low but Armstead never got him the ball. Well, Grant and Doug work together so well that the moment Doug seals his guy, Gibbs has the ball in his mitts. He's outstanding at that. Someone on our board did a breakdown of the efficiency of each of our 5 man lineups; Doug's efficiency was far, far better with Gibbs out there than when it was just Chatman. That's why you rarely see Wragge come in for Gibbs, it's almost always Dingman, since Dingman is a better passer. It's no coincidence that Gibbs is third in the nation in assist/TO ratio; losing him would be a huge problem.

The other thing is, that slow stroll he takes down the lane isn't him being that slow, it's him intentionally doing it. Normally he gets Doug on one block and Greg on the other, and then goes slowly down the lane as if to say, HEY, I'M GOING TO THE HOLE, COME OFF OF DOUG OR GREG AND COVER ME. It's like a running back going 2/3 speed on a sweep, in order to let his blockers get out there and the play to develop before he decides which route to take. What happens is the guy guarding Gibbs sags off on McDermott's side, neither guy comes off of their post defense, and Gibbs jogs to the rim and scores. Heck, yesterday it happened right in front of Carl Hall - Hall was leaning against McDermott as if he was trying to seal him off on offense, and Gibbs ran right at Hall, who never budged, and put it up uncontested for a layup.

Comments like Cold's are exactly what Gibbs wants. Slow, can't do jack, nothing to see here.
Personally, I respect the way Gibbs plays. I think he's a good floor leader and conveys a calm to his team. He may not be lightning fast, but he was fast enough to drive past us a few times yesterday. Having said all of this, he's a BlueJay. So, I hate him.

            • I didn't personally see it, but a friend of mine claims Marshall gave one of the assistants the "stare down" treatment during the first half. Around the time CJ was having his lapse in attention and focus. Did anybody else witness this?

              • He didn't give him "the stare down", he gave them a complete nuclear ass chewing that woke Gal Makel out of a deep slumber 13,000 miles away.

Any idea what it was about?

I think I read in Forbes that bosses aren't supposed to yell at their subordinates.

                  • I wish I did. It was a blow up not unlike others over the 6 seasons for HCGM. He is a passionate individual that demands the best from everyone, and I mean everyone. It did not appear to be directed at one specific coach, but rather multiple coaches. It was a heat of the moment thing that they've all seen before.

                    • Possibly nothing directed at them personally. Maybe a venting meant for everyone to hear, including the players. Coulda been the Mike Gundy approach. Take it out on the men rather than the kid.
Where oh where is our T. Boone Pickens.

                      • But even passionate people need a filter, especially those that perform their jobs in front of 10,505 supportive fans. Even though I didn't see it, it doesn't look good to some people that did see it. It's one thing to do it to players, but save the theatrics with assistants till after the game behind closed doors.

                        • He definitely got on them, I don't think it was directed them because I don't know what it could have been about. CJ messed up, yet Coach decided to play him so he's gotta be mad at himself.

I'm sure it's fine and as Doc said they've seen it before.

                          • I can't remember which player was which, but Casey Stengel would absolutely rip one of his players to shreds for something another player had done. The guilty player was sensitive to criticism and didn't respond well to it. The player Stengel ripped could give a rat's a$$ whether he got ripped or not, so there was no harm done. The player who had made the mistake felt so bad that one of his teammates got ripped for his mistake, that he swore he would never make that mistake again.

There's a lot of tricks in the bags of the great coaches.
