    Go Shocks!
We may have stolen it from VCU, but it is not original with them, either.

BTW, the Low Brass "Beat The Hell Outta You" cheer, though at least a three decade old WSU tradition, did not originate here either. That was lifted from some other college band back in that era.

Dudley Do Right, which is played right before the start of each half, well, I have no idea if that one was lifted from elsewhere or not.

Back in the 70s and 80s we had quite a pipeline of assistant band directors and graduate assistants from Michigan State, so if you listen close to MSU home games, you do hear a few familiar melodies with the cheer and chant stuff.

    • Almost everything is borrowed or stolen these days. We have made it ours. Who cares otherwise? Embrace it and get behind it people.

      • It is NOT plagiarism. It is true that VCU does the war song, but they did not write it or copyright it. I am sure that WSU is following all copyright laws by playing it at our arena. You can go to many arenas and hear the low brass song done. How is this any different? Don't let a few sore VCU fans bully you into not participating in it. Coach has made it clear he wants the fans to embrace the war song and make it a proud part of the Shocker tradition.

        • Thanks for the clarification ShockBand. I do recall the MSU thing and after reading your post I think the only "original" is the Dudley Do Right but my memory may be foggy. For the record I do think the War Chant is cool especially at the end of a game when our Shocks about the be victorious.

          • I have to say it doesn't fit our fan base. I say this after hearing it from VCU fans in person. It seems perfect for them.

Bingo. So long as the sheet music is either purchased with proper copyrights in place or an arrangement written here and therefore covered under the School of Music's blanket licensing with BMI/ASCAP, and the ORIGINAL copyright owner receives proper royalties, all is fine. Cheers get copied because they are fun and hopefully effective.

Doesn't matter. The Star Spangled Banner doesn't fit alot of our country either (home of the entitled maybe but not brave).

Sing the M##### F##### if for no other reason than our coach loves it.

                  • Hey all,

I'm one of the students in the band right now, and I thought I'd give you an update what going on for these last 3 home games.

In the 2nd half during the 12 minute media timeout, The band has been requested by the media department to do the war song then (no matter if the team is up or down at that point) so that the words can be displayed on the jumbo-tron. It happens usually during the Preferred Health Systems ball toss, so there is a distraction that many of you may not have noticed the song being sung.

In addition, the band has begun singing (without tuba and instruments) the War Chant at the 30 second mark in regulation if the game is out of reach when we are winning. That usually allows 5 times for it to be sung in succession.

We seem to have been successful getting participation from most of the people around us. It's hard to tell if people are participating that are half-way across the arena. So if you could all help singing loud and proud during those times mentioned we can make this a thing that lasts.

The War Chant sounded so f'n cool while we were in Atlanta. That will be something I will never forget.

                    Thanks all! Go Shox!!!

                    • It might help if they got the Cheerleaders out there front and center singing the War Chant

ShockerNation, this Tuesday let's do the War Chant right -- Shocker proud and loud!!!!

Time to embrace this "stuff." Not bad for a Kansan, eh?

                        • i've never liked the chant and if it dies off, then I won't miss it. VCU was singing this long before us, since I can't stand VCU, I don't want anything associated with them with us.
