  • First off, I love the chant. First time I heard it was at the MVC tourney last year. ISUr wanted us sooo bad and thought they could handle us. Well, they couldn't. You don't want to go to war with the Shockers. It is perfect because it sums up what the other team is thinking coming in: we'll be the team to knock them off, or they're overrated, we'll beat them. And then by the last timeout when we're up, of the last 30 seconds when our crowd goes into the "you don't want to go to war..." It's amazing, because that's when they (the other team) realizes they didn't know it was going to be a war. Win or lose, it's going to be tough to walk out of there.

Secondly, I think the last words were tough to catch on, but at this point it's moot to try to figure out another rhyme. Too many people know what it is now, and to get them to change would be difficult. Also, they play it on the score board. I think it's a little too late to change now. Probably should have been discussed and decided on before the start of this season. Oh well, don't start no stuff, won't be no stuff! Go Shox!
I just want to stand on land...

    @rjl:
If I had a gun with two bullets and was in a room with Hitler, Bin Laden, and a Creighton fan, I think I'd shoot the Creighton fan twice.

          • While I love the War Chant as is, I couldn't help but compete with Kung Wu's masterpiece:

            You'll know our name,
            We bring the pain.

Doesn't rhyme, but stuff and stuff isn't the most clever either.

                  • I have to say, during the NIT run, singing "We're Not Gonna' Take It" was most fitting. That one was short lived but got the place rockin' and was easy to get into.

Singing "Don't start no stuff won't be no stuff" sounded quite scary at first. Now that I've moved to an urban setting from the far reaches of the county, well, Yo I'm down with that now, dawg (did I say that right?).

                    • Hey everyone!

Wow guys!!! That was cool especially at the 30 second mark...chill bumps if I might add, lol.
That was quite the noticeable difference how many more people were participating.
I've been reading this thread that has blown up recently and I can speak for the band that we really appreciate your appreciation of us. It has been amazing for us to use our talent and share it with the team, coaches, and the rest of ShockerNation and in return be given praise for what we do every game this season. This War Chant/Song is a testament to that. When we started playing it last year at (IIRC) the Tulsa or Northern Co. game, we got plenty of strange looks and it obviously was not catching on very well and there were some games that we didnt play it simply because we were using it at a momentum change in Shox favor within the game. But, Wow! Once we got to half way through conference play, especially during and after Creighton home game, this thing started taking off. And once tournament time came...guys, I have never been more proud to be in a band program than those moments on the sideline during our run to the FF. ShockerNation's response and acceptance and participation of the War Chant is probably one of the biggest compliments you can give to a band program like ours. And it came from all angles. From the fans and student sections at the MVC tourney against ISUr, Gregg Marshall and the ENTIRE team dancing in front of the fans and band at SLC after beating Gonzaga. HCGM starting the Chant on flights home kicking off the tuba line while playing a trombone. Hearing the Chant echo through the Georgia Dome as we took a lead against Louisville. Guys those are going to be the fondest memories I have, and they are still being written as we speak.

Now the implementation of 30 second-when-winning War Chant was bone chilling cool. And thats in thanks to you guys spreading the word (probably?) sprinkled throughout Koch. I have been disappointed that the media dictated the War Song be played during 12 minute media and then put a distracting ball toss during it. We play it, mostly because they post the words (which I will talk about soon :P) up on the nice, new, big, jumbo-tron. But we feel if we played it again during another part of the game, it would be too much. However, we did feel the 30 second left in game type thing might work...and it obviously has.
So, Thank you so much for all your support.

In regards to the 2nd phrase of words, I want to say that I appreciate your input, and that I would have to agree that when we started singing it (at the top of our lungs) 'don't start no stuff won't be no stuff' did feel very awkward and a mouthful to try and belt out at the highest dynamic. It just didnt have a good punch to it. But we didnt change it, and before long a lot more people started singing along with us so we didn't worry about it. And we decided to definitely not change it when HCGM got behind it. So now its been more than a year since its introduction and to try and change it will be difficult. I can assure you it will probably not be changed this year. I can put a word in to the director with some clever sayings from this thread, but I can't guarantee anything. And if we did change it, we would need the backing from HCGM to really make the change for the masses. Otherwise everyone will be lost and confused and the Chant would most likely die after that.

Regardless, let's make these last two home games something to remember. And if you have the time and energy, come on out to a women's game where you can sing along and dance with us too! Especially when they are a fun team to watch and ranked no less! :D

                      Thanks for your support again!
                      Go Shox!!!

                      • Bump!

                        Hey everyone,

I would really like this to sound loud and fill up the arena tomorrow. It would be good practice for the Mo. State game when we are on ESPN.

Dont forget - 2nd half 12:00 minute media timeout for full song.
30 seconds left in the game when winning for just the chant.

Listen for the student section to start up and join in whenever you like. Let everyone know sitting around you so they can join in too. Hell maybe start it up at the bar you're at! :D

                        Thanks everyone & Go Shox!

But if no one can come up with something original(myself included), perhaps a good compromise would be to remove the "don't start no stuff won't be no stuff", and simply chant repeatedly the "you don't want to go to war with the Shockers"?
I'm with you. Don't like that we stole it. Also, I believe "Don't start no stuff won't be no stuff" comes from the rap song "Damn" by Youngbloodz.

This ground has been covered before, but the entire thing comes from the New Orleans based Rebirth Brass Band. VCU didn't write the song (the only differences in their version from the original are substituting in the words "rams" and "stuff"), they just modified it from the original. We just did the same thing.

                              • Agree with @BlkSaxShock:. I think we heard at the last home game against SIU how special the War Song is when Shocker Nation participates. We have gone over the origins of the song and the wording ad nauseum. Let's leave that behind and embrace it. We have two home games left. Can you imagine how sweet it is going to sound when 10K+ fans sing it on ESPN as we beat Missouri St for a perfect 31-0 regular season? Or, how about the Shocker Nation singing it on national TV on CBS as we win the conference tournament? And again as we make another Final 4 run in the tournament. Shocker Nation: Sing it LOUD and PROUD!
