Regardless, as a university, you have to at least offer your games to everyone. Hell, if there was a pay-per-view channel available through all outlets, I'd gladly pay for the channel. The thing that I can't understand is over half the fanbase can't even be OFFERED it. It's just a straight up "you're **** out of luck" situation. That is a very poor excuse. Games were on KWCH as recently as the mid-2000's. Have things really changed that much in 6 or 7 years? And if Omaha or Topeka can get away with it, I dunno why Wichita wouldn't be able to as well. It's not like this is the University of Evansville Purple Aces. These games bring in some viewers and some dollars.

It's been discussed before, but Kansas 22 is available in more Kansas households than any of the Wichita locals. There could be an argument over which serves more shocker fans, but from a household only perspective 22 is larger.

Not so much with the CW, they still have affiliate rules, but usually the CW is a UHF channel with rudimentary programming abilities at best. You are absolutely right regarding My TV and other additional channels digital broadcast opened up. The challenge there is to get the local affiliates to utilize their additional broadcasting capabilities. Right now, most stations don't know what to do with the additional channels. Instead of being innovative, most broadcast weather, archaic sports or foreign programming, news rebroadcasts or programming like Me TV. Many are also left empty broadcasting nothing. Time will change that. Eventually, local affiliates will see opportunity with these channels and at that point, you may see a lot of local sports being broadcast. Right now, all of that capacity is being wasted.

I generally agree with ShockerFever. I'm not sure what other opportunities we have, but I'm sure they are available. The university chooses to go with Cox because they have the highest bid, which may or may not be the right decision.
Unfortunately I have been very disappointed with the WSU and the MVC regarding TV, not just regarding COX. I'm frustrated with ESPN as well. Since the uprising of NBC Sports, multiple conferences have moved away from ESPN to get away from their forced terms and conditions such as the Bracket Buster event. Furthermore, it is disappointing as a fan when conferences smaller than the MVC can develop free online streaming or teams like Creighton can figure out a way to get their games on ESPN3 but we can't. I'm not sure what our administrations can do or are doing, but I wish we would really work at doing everything possible to accomplish the same.

As far as Topeka showing KU/KSU and Wichita not showing WSU, I'd guess that those Topeka stations make more off of selling advertising during KU games than the Wichita stations would make off of WSU. If we want to admit it or not, KU is a huge sell and advertisers know that people all over the state are watching in large numbers. While WSU is popular and gets plenty of views, it's not on the same level right now.

Now if WSU could convince other affiliates in the state to also carry most if not all the games that 3, 10 or 12 picked up, I could see them moving away from 22. But like most TV deals, it's about households available more than anything else.

Don't the network stations cover the western 2/3 of the state? And if you could get one pf the network stations to partner with metro sports in kc, then i believe almost the whole state is covered.

When the games are shown on Channel 12, the area outside of the channel 12 viewing area gets the same games on COX KANSAS 22. It had been that way for several years. So there are far more households available when the games are on Channel 12. People in Topeka watched the games on 22 while those of us in Wichita watched it on Channel 12.

Actually it was more recent than that. Last year was the first year NONE of the local games were shown on Channel 12. In 2010 the home Tulsa game was shown on channel 12. The number of games on Channel 12 had been going down over the last few years (while the number of games on COX 22 had been going up) but last year and now this year are the only times NONE of the Shocker games are being shown on a local TV station.

It is sad and hard to believe that even during the darkest hours of Shocker basketball they could get several games on local TV but now they can't. I am either very disappointed in our local TV stations (for giving up on the Shocks) or our Athletic Dept. for giving in only to COX or a combination of the two.

It isn't that easy. I know it seems easy, but it isn't. Networks only allow affiliates to preempt a small amount of programming. These rules have gotten stricter over time. While it is a no brainer for a fan of a team to believe, and usually rightfully so, that broadcasting the local team is a cash cow, the penalties can outweigh any gains. Also, if they go over their allotted time in preemptive programming, the local channel could risk the loss of network affiliation.

I would assume you are right and you know what you are talking about. It would explain why the number of Shocker games on local TV had been going down over the last 10 years or so. But as others have pointed out other markets still show some games on local TV including other Valley cities like Springfield, MO, Peoria, IL and Terre Haute, IN (the Indy St- New Mexico game yesterday was shown on local TV).

I can't believe that Channel 12 isn't willing to show at least 3 or 4 Shocker games a year (as opposed to the 8 to 10 games a year that used to shown regularly on local TV for years). The only explanation that makes sense is that COX has outbid the local TV stations for those rights.
