Making a good hire for WBB would be nice but not all that important or significant. ADKS could swing and miss there and recover.

However, hiring the right MBB coach was absolutely critical with no room for swing and miss, or a foul ball, or a single, or a double, or a triple. It needed to be a home run. At this point, although we are early in year 2, it doesn't appear that HCPM is anywhere close to the home run hire needed. Perhaps ADKS did the best he could with resources available and the other financial challenges WSU sports are facing.

Unless, the big boys decide to step up and bail us out the I think HCPM will be here at least 2 more years after this year. Just not sure the funds are there to do anything about that. Has to be a reason that the WSU-ICAA has chosen to go dark with their annual financial report.

Something has to give or change in a big way. The term "existential threat" is probably overused this days but WSU's ability to continue as a viable D-1 athletic program appears to be in real jeopardy.

We will probably see some kind of realignment in college sports in the next few years but I don't see WSU participating in the top rung of whatever that turns out to be.
I'm not saying that Mill's is "the guy" but what is he supposed to do without a war chest. The money is way better spent on talent compared to firing him and making payments

Just helping you out in case you have memory loss from having your head stuck up Marshalls ass.
How are your ideas working for us asshat? And if you think Marshall wouldn’t have won an average of 7 to 10 games a year more than his successors you are dumber than your mom and dad said you are. No, you are dumber anyway. You must be one of those crybabies that Gregg didn’t pay any attention to or that parked in his parking space. Anyway, there’s no debate… it’s arithmetic.

North Texas has done more with less NIL than WSU

The 8-2 thing sure gets old fast when you don’t peel back the layers. That’s a fake 8-2 with zero quality.

So far in the only two games against teams with pulses, we have been outscored by 55 points combined.

            • How did Marshall’s 2nd year go? Genuinely curious.

He improved the win total by 6 in year 2.

Also of note.. in year 1 and 2 with WSU Marshall had 7 "quality" regular season wins (A or B games via Kenpom). Mills has had 4 of those his entire career so far.

                  Year 1: 11-20
                  Year 2: 17-17
                  Year 3: 25-10

Then the fun really started: Average record in years 4 through 10 (2016-17 last year in the MVC) was 29.7-6.1 (208-43).

The 3 seasons in the AAC his teams were 25-8, 22-15 and 23-8.

Most wins since Marshall was Browns final season when the Shocks went 17-15. Surely this year's teams will beat that and will beat Marshall's 2nd year, especially considering the state of MBB in the AAC, but with 9 seniors on this year's team it is very hard to see anything but a step backwards next year.

But there is more to it than just wins and losses. The entire culture and environment around collegiate basketball has changed and not for the better. That is doubly true for Wichita State basketball with everything that has transpired post John Bardo and the chances of regaining what we had pre-Jay Golden seems like a real long shot.

I’d probably stay away from comparing Mills with these kind of things.

You must be legit retarded. I didn’t say that his successors were doing better or well. I said Marshall wouldn’t have done well, as evidenced by his clear struggles to even maintain a healthy team in the end.

I loved having Marshall, but I’m not so blind in loyalty to recognize his pitfalls.

also I can’t believe you just resorted to calling me a crybaby

whatever - let’s not let this turn us into monsters. The facts of the matter is that neither of us are happy with the state of the program, and I’ll not be bothered to argue the past for too long.

Hopefully in a couple years time we’ll have enough cash freed up + the donors are back online to get the program a coach that’s going to do us good.

                      • I'm going to just say it. While I appreciated the burst of fire we saw from Mills last game, he isn't the guy to get it done. He just isn't. I think his ceiling is probably an NIT bid. I don't think we go back to the NCAAs under his leadership. To be frank, I think any coach is going to struggle to get us to the big dance with the new college landscape.

                        • I think we all have a champagne appetite but WSU has a beer budget right now.

The administration has shot itself in the foot and it's going to take a while to heal if it ever does

Brown was way worse than his numbers. He was gone just in nick of time. We would have been a 200 or worse program last year if IB was at the helm.

I do not see Mills as the guy. I just see him as the valet parking the car, keeping the engine warm until we can afford to hire the right guy. IB was stuffing a rag in the gas tank when he was fired. Over half of the money we need is tied up in contracts iirc. Once we aren’t paying Marshall and IB we can afford to go all in on a real coach and it won’t be that difficult to launch us back into the top 50 where we belong.

Given we need 7 mil to keep things chugging as-is, I don’t see how the coaching budget is going to go higher. I would be happy to be wrong though.

Have to spend money to make money. The WSU admin needs to develop a strategic plan that outlines what they want to achieve and how much it will cost.

Once the vision is in place you start fundraising like hell.
