Smithson was recruiting to one of the top conferences in D1. There may have been a little bending of the rules in getting Carr, and WSU got a post season ban for Jones. It wasn't just the jacket he left Wichita with, it was probably more that he wasn't eligible coming out of high school.

The Jones incident was mentioned but the ban was because of things done in a prior era.
No way does a booster giving a San Diego kid a coat warrant a ban.
I believe the "prior era" coach was coaching in the northwest somewhere and received coach of the year the same year WSU was banned. Someone on here should know the specifics. If so, help my old forgetful mind a little help.

Harry Miller was the previous coach who had a number of, as I recall, fairly minor violations. Part of the harsh penalty was, thanks to the football program, WSU was the most penalized school in NCAA history.
