He recruited and signed Pohto didn't he? I know Pohto is not going to tear up the league, but how would this team look without him?

The two dudes coming in next year can play and play right away.

Get behind this coach and his staff. Guy knows what the hell he is doing and has hired the right asst coaches to help him get the job done.

You can criticize and still be behind the team. Those two aren't mutually exclusive.

Most of those are due to ... the coach. Which is the core of this. Penny brought excitement to their program that wasn't there under past coaches. Part of Mills job is to bring excitement and get NIL going (also part of the ADs job) among all the other thigns. I don't get the defeatist attitude of so many fans. Oh boo hoo, we will never be able to compete because (insert 1 of 20938430924 excuses here). Either we compete or we don't. If we aren't comparable to a team in our conference that's on the leadership in the program. We need to stop making excuses and figure out how to get it done.

100% agree with that. Unfortunately, his "underachieving" has still resulted in them demolishing us and getting to the tourney when we don't

Well said! We have two 4 star guards coming next year and still have a scholarship to fill. Have some patience. We have only played 1 regular game which we easily won.

Not to be nitpicky, but they're both 3 star recruits. Pipkin is just inside the Top 150 and Williams is just inside the Top 200.

From what is sounds like, a lot of the top echelon of players entering the portal have been recruited well prior to formally entering he portal.

Pending transfers we only lose Germany and Ridgnal.

What exactly do you need to be satisfied with the direction of the program. I would take Paul over Penny everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. Whoever you wanted as coach was not to be. GET OVER IT!

I literally would like to know what you expect. What will it take for you to get on the Paul Mills bandwagon?

Most of this board including me are happy with the progress of the program. Is it perfect, no. But we are getting better. Enjoy the ride.

Perhaps unknowingly (to many at the time) it also pointed out what often occurs with new coaches, especially first timers ("at this level"):


Randy spent a lot of time working on that play, and a few sets. A ton in fact. There was little to no long term thought plan or formula. It was the here and now. And just like ABC said, expectations were not realistic (not just that play, but beating KSU in game 2 on the road was a much bigger deal obviously) and was a much larger example of Fool's gold as compared to last night's version.

And to be clear, I am not suggesting that HCPM is on a similar tract. Not at all.

Yes, I forgot about the K-State game. I remember Mitch Holthaus (then the KSU radio guy) interviewing Smithson and bringing up the fact that WSU had never won AT KSU; not Ralph Miller, Gene Smithson etc. With the addition of Maurice Evans, I thought WSU was on a trajectory that actually didn't happen until Turgeon, ten years later, and then Marshall.

The best coach we had in school history coming off a final four and like 7 consecutive years of making the NCAA Tournament still didn’t come close to out recruiting Memphis.

Expecting Paul Mills to come in and do it off the bat is dumb.

It is a lazy and stupid comparison.

The 2 freshmen commits for the 2024 class are literally 2 of the 10-15 highest rated high school recruits WSU has ever signed. Both could be top-10, depending on what service you want to look at.

Not really sure what else you want.
