Well, I have great distaste for Roy Williams and believe he is at least somewhat shady. MT turned out pretty OK. Turner probably will also.

This was my exact point yesterday when I asked about his dad. He had a pretty good coaching resume himself (KSU and Ohio State) and I would think that his dad may influence (usually dads are strong influences) his son who would later want to be a coach. Just a thought.

Now that's funny!! Not the post itself, @shockmonster, but who some people thought you were referring to in your previous post which followed a post regarding Steve Eck (whose dad was Rusty I believe). Next time you might explain your post more as you did with this last post as the previous one had a whole different meaning depending on whose dad might have had influence on their son.

Kai, while I don't think Turner should be considered a bad guy for his previous association with Eck, that quote means absolutely nothing. He has to say something positive, and so he said that. It's true that Turner is a well-respected coach in this region...if by that you mean that he is well-respected as a JUCO guy in Kansas. Let's not make him out to be some well-known young Division I assistant. He's only spent a year at this level, as the third assistant at an unsuccessful low-major program nonetheless.

Make sure you don't do anything shady like over recruit (like everyone else does), oh wait a minute, we already do that ...in basketball. We should really stop this tactic and sink into mediocrity...like we have in baseball :)

It is not entirely accurate that everyone recruits past the limit and pushes guys out. I can name a number of programs that do not do this and have had a lot of success. Baseball and basketball are also very different sports in how recruiting works and scholarship money. Baseball kids come in knowing their spot is on the line. Basketball kids do not; the recruitment process is quite different. This comparison should not be made.

I would also like to point out that Marshall did not necessarily recruit over the limit for this class, as I'm sure they took commitments from multiple players (Lufile, Uwadiae, Hawkins) with the assumption that at least one, if not more, would not qualify. That is not to say, however, that he has not purposely overrecruited and pushed out guys in the past. This doesn't really have much to do with Turner, though. If Marshall goes over the limit, it has nothing to do with Turner's recruitment practices.

Why should a basketball scholarship have any less expectation to perform than any/all other scholarships?

1. Every scholarship is on the line - even academic. It's "free money." Don't perform or get the required grades and you may find yourself on the outside looking in.

2. "Going over the limit has nothing to do with Turner's practices." What are Turners's "practices?" Nobody said it did. Over recruiting is a "practice" just as "work for pay" is in the junior college ranks, since they do not allow full scholarships. Who is to say Turner has done this practce? It appears more like the AD of the schools that participate in this "practice" are responsible for it. They do it no matter whom the coach is.

3. Naming a number of programs that do not over recruit means nothing. Most every successful team recruits depth at every position. That could be called over recruiting. Players coming in expect to be number one at their positions - that's the way they should think. If they end up being 3rd on the depth chart they often transfer to get playing time. Coaches recruit as much talent as possible, and the players compete for playing time. It could all be called over recruiting IMO. Nobody just recruits a starting five and then players that expect to be on the bench after that. Could you imagine, "we need to recruit some more players that expect to be on the bench."

Look I'm not here saying Steve Eck is a saint, Im just saying the guy is a hell of a coach and teacher and if Doc or any of the rest of you cant look at that objectively then so be it. His win loss record and championships at different levels proves the guy can coach.
Not sure how one recruits to a public school where the parents have to actually move to the district, (what do you offer?) and if you really had proof of wrongdoing I'm pretty sure with all the obvious haters out there (jealousy?) we would have known about it by now. So please someone anyone tell me names of those kids that changed districts because of Eck? Impossible to think they wanted to play for the best coach in the city right?

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and you are welcome to yours. I don't hear many questioning his coaching ability. They are questioning his ability to properly represent our University.

I don't know what kids actually changed schools because he recruited him. I just know the conversation I witnessed.

You must not be a very good fan, if you have only 148 posts. And the last few show that you not only have an unpopular opinion of a well respected poster, but that your reading and comprehension need work as well. Perhaps you should spend more time learning to read and comprehend, and then you could present a well organized position.
