Another factor is the amount of time between the injury and waiting years before petitioning for the waiver.
Usually the petition is submitted immediately when an injury occurs or at least the following year, I think.

A lot of gray area, and if I were in the NCAA I would not grant it.

Didn't Hall have to be medically approved to play basketball this year? It certainly does appear that WSU is using Hall's heart condition to gain an athletic advantage.

There is a presumption against granting the 6th year, and the burden lies with the petitioning school to overcome it. This is a more difficult standard to meet than a mere "should we/shouldn't we grant it out of fairness" scenario. The case needs to be pretty airtight.

I am not holding my breath on this one.

I believe Lew Hill got a 6th year back in the mid 80s due to his back injury. There is a chance that he will be fine. Speculating anymore is merely speculating. I hope for Carl's sake this can be resolved with another year of eligibility.

It would be unfortunate for both the team and Carl.

But this is not a case where anyone is out to get us if the results turn out to be negative. 6th year grants happen, but they are the exception, not the norm. HCGM and CH had better provide a veritable mountain of evidence proving every aspect of their argument or the NCAA will deny it.

                  Just the way it is.

Yeah I think that is exactly how the ncaaa will look at it exactly.

6th years for medical reasons are granted at least on occasion. However, it is usually following the year of injury such as for Jacqui Kalin at UNI who will be get a 6th year next year after blowing out her knee prior to her 5th year this past season. Jacqui missed her 3rd year due to injury also. Not sure it makes any difference but I think Jaqui will be finishing up her masters degree next year.

This is issue is quite different as the year in question is several years ago. Was this not known when we recruited Carl and, if it was, why did we wait until now to address it?

Man, I had picked the Shockers to contend for a Valley title next year (defending their title, actually). Now.. hmm.. I don't know.

'Hope this works out in Hall and Wichita State's favor.

If people are going to post or speculate about (and thus propagate) Internet rumors about Hall's eligibility, then do so in one place instead of spreading them out all over, from Basketball to Recruiting, every time a worry about Carl crosses someone's mind.

Here's the place, and I'll start things off with a dose of skepticism. I have no inside info; I never do. (Personally, I think that adds to my credibility, if only because alleged inside info or rumors from "sources" so often prove bogus.) I'll just note that, according to the MaxPreps site for Carl's high school, Bleckley County HS in Cochran GA, he was a senior in 2008-9. If that's true, then there's no basis for concern about his eligibility clock running out, because next season is just the fourth year since then, and you get five years to use up four seasons of eligibility. So the speculators need to find a new worry.
I'm not sure you know what dispell means?

Agreed. The NCAA is not out to get WSU or Hall in this case. They have their rules; 4 years of eligibility that can be used in a 5 year time period with getting a 6th year being an exception...though not impossible obviously. Taylor Brown (Bradley) had a similiar situation to this didnt he? He was denied a 6th year. Though I think Nate Funk of Creighton got one several years ago right? But not sure what the circumstances were there. I only remember he was ugly ;) But anyways, its just unfortunate and I hope Marshall and Carl succeed in getting the waiver. That being said, Im not super optimistic about it.
