Another factor is the amount of time between the injury and waiting years before petitioning for the waiver.
Usually the petition is submitted immediately when an injury occurs or at least the following year, I think.
A lot of gray area, and if I were in the NCAA I would not grant it.

There is a presumption against granting the 6th year, and the burden lies with the petitioning school to overcome it. This is a more difficult standard to meet than a mere "should we/shouldn't we grant it out of fairness" scenario. The case needs to be pretty airtight.
I am not holding my breath on this one.

But this is not a case where anyone is out to get us if the results turn out to be negative. 6th year grants happen, but they are the exception, not the norm. HCGM and CH had better provide a veritable mountain of evidence proving every aspect of their argument or the NCAA will deny it.
Just the way it is.

6th years for medical reasons are granted at least on occasion. However, it is usually following the year of injury such as for Jacqui Kalin at UNI who will be get a 6th year next year after blowing out her knee prior to her 5th year this past season. Jacqui missed her 3rd year due to injury also. Not sure it makes any difference but I think Jaqui will be finishing up her masters degree next year.
This is issue is quite different as the year in question is several years ago. Was this not known when we recruited Carl and, if it was, why did we wait until now to address it?

Here's the place, and I'll start things off with a dose of skepticism. I have no inside info; I never do. (Personally, I think that adds to my credibility, if only because alleged inside info or rumors from "sources" so often prove bogus.) I'll just note that, according to the MaxPreps site for Carl's high school, Bleckley County HS in Cochran GA, he was a senior in 2008-9. If that's true, then there's no basis for concern about his eligibility clock running out, because next season is just the fourth year since then, and you get five years to use up four seasons of eligibility. So the speculators need to find a new worry.Wichita State, home of the All-Americans.
