Ok, Im not trying to start anything here, but the day before Self bolted for Illinois he made a big announcement that he was staying at UT. Tulsa was coming off E8 year and UT donors had put together a millon dollar bonus package and all was well. The next day HCBS was at a presser in Illinois being anoounced as new coach. In fact I think he did almost the same thing when he went to KU. Im glad this announcement was made but I will not "sleep well" until all Big 6 conference positions are filled and HCGM is still living at CCC. Again not trying to rain on this parade but this is a discussion board so we discuss.:greedy_dollars:

Sexton acted immediately to retain a valuable employee and was successful. Most people evaluating an employee would consider that a good thing.

      2. He's twisting arms and going around to high dollar boosters with his hat in his hands and he will get down on his knees and beg if he has to. He's raising additional money in a tough economy. Not many people can do that and pretty much nobody enjoys going to friends, acquaintances, and complete strangers and asking them to give money. Most of WSU's athletic directors in the last 30 or 40 years (***cough*** - Lew Perkins ***Cough***) wouldn't, couldn't, or didn't do that. The fact that he has access to the money to renogtiate Marshall's contract indicates he's doing a great job with one of the most important and difficult aspects of being a successful athletic director.

      3. Do YOU want to try to get along with, manage, and supervise both Gene Stephenson and Gregg Marshall?? Those don't appear to be two of the easier people to supervise in college athletics. The two of them could send a lesser man than Sexton running for the nearest NAIA opening.
      Very good points.

Marshall is the type of coach who knows that Wichita State should have had a "NCAA MEN'S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS 1965" banner hanging up in the rafters. What that would have meant. Now we just keep on fighting.

Yes, as long as people are afraid he's going to leave.

These are good points. But that was Self. He appeared to be a nomad. Always looking for the better job. Marshall's history is more stable. He stayed at Winthrop for 9 years before coming to Wichita. There is no reason to doubt that he is putting down roots here and plans on a staying for hopefully at least another 4 or 5 years or so.

Yep, next time I am just going to check in with @Downtown Shocker Brown:, @WSUwatcher: and @SubGod22: when the rumor mill gets cranking. There were probably a few others, but you guys had a good handle on the situtation.

Each year 3G stays at WSU the more likely he is to finish his coaching career here. Do you guys have any thoughts on the likelihood of that happening.

ADES and the new President need to make sure we support 3G and the program to the best of our abilities. Hopefully, the new Prez will be every bit as supportive of the athletic department as Don and Shirley Beggs have been. We also need to make sure we continue to be aligned with the strongest conference possible.

I suppose you can never say never, but the South Carolina job was really the only one that concerned me. I don't Nebraska was ever a serious possibility and I also did't think Illinois would go back to the MVC for second consecutive time for a coaching hire and not really sure Illinois would meet 3G's parameters either. With South Carolina appearing to be out of the mix at this point I think we are OK.

I really do think 3G is excited with the incoming recruiting class and the level of recruits he now finds him and his staff to be in on. That has required a tremendous amount of work and is something you don't easily walk away from.

I think we'll be pretty safe at least until his kids graduate highschool. He did say he'd like to keep them in the same school until they graduate. I say we start recruiting them to come study at The Wichita State University!

                      ;)

If 3G stays until both the kids are out high school he will be 55-56 years old. Maybe he has one more job change in him at the point but if that does happen I like our chances of keeping Coach around until he retires.

I would say that says a lot about Bill Self....:witless:

Is Lynn's family still mostly in Washington? Who is to say that this isn't the perfect midway point between both sides of their families?

I don't wanna start anything, but I think the Beggs had more to do with Marshall staying than ES. Just a hunch.

Also, thanks to the Sycamore fan for dropping by. Appreciate the kind words. Seems like a lot of other schools around the Valley have ignorant, moronic fans that are extremely insecure. It's nice to know those fans will be insecure for many years down the road now that Marshall is planted here in Wichita.
Fever, I have bit my tongue for many months reading your disparaging comments regarding Dr. Sexton. I, along with a handful of supporters of WSU who have direct involvement with ES on a continuous basis, have found that the closeness of 3G and ES is known to many insiders and that your comments, while you are free and entitled to make them, couldn't be farther from the truth. I'd also like to point out that it is very easy to sit on the sidelines, do nothing except criticize, and have no accountability for your comments. Perhaps you should think before you write. I'd even go so far to suggest that you look in the mirror before calling anyone else ignorant or moronic.

This is great news for Shocker fans and who really cares where the credit lies. I know Dr. Beggs and Dr. Sexton don't!
