This is great news. I told my wife and she literally beamed. Some of you on here know what is going on with my wife. The first of January she was diagnosed with cancer. She is one of the 5% that contract lung cancer and never smoked. No one in the family and not in the work place ever. It had masticised to her brain and she has gone through radiation to reduce the lesions. We were in the car listening to one of the local sports guys asking if Gregg Marshall would be back next year. Her response was "I wonder if I'll be here next year." It was one of those moments that kind of hits you square in the face. She had a second MRI and the Radiologist showed us that the lesions indeed had started to shrink some as much as 50%. She will have another MRI in a couple of months to see if they have continued to shrink or at least remain the same. She started chemo just before the valley tournament and she insisted we make our annual trek. Although weakened we still made it to the games and to the Hill with friends. She has a treatment every three weeks and will for the foreseeable future but the oncologist thinks she will have a full recovery. I just wanted to tell everyone on SN how much 3 G staying means to us and please don't respond wishing us luck and prayers because we already know what great supportive people we have at WSU. This thread is for everyone wishing to celebrate our great coach staying. GO SHOCKS
Excellent news. Hopes this helps lower my elevated blood pressure the doc says I have. I now look forward to our new recruits. Thank you GM for breaking the 'stepping stone' cycle.
Just wanted to pop in here to throw in my happiness that Marshall is staying at WSU. Yeah, it sucks getting our brains bashed in by his teams time after time, but he's a heck of a coach and is good for the Valley. As the saying goes, a rising tide lifts all boats!
Perhaps the MVC can now get to the point where we have multiple Top 25 teams every year. It would be nice if one of them was mine, but hey, I don't want to get ahead of myself...
1. This is called being proactive. It's addressing a potential problem before it becomes a problem. If the details of the contract are being finalized, you can bet that the discussion was started BEFORE the UNL offer came along. Sexton acted immediately to retain a valuable employee and was successful. Most people evaluating an employee would consider that a good thing.
2. He's twisting arms and going around to high dollar boosters with his hat in his hands and he will get down on his knees and beg if he has to. He's raising additional money in a tough economy. Not many people can do that and pretty much nobody enjoys going to friends, acquaintances, and complete strangers and asking them to give money. Most of WSU's athletic directors in the last 30 or 40 years (***cough*** - Lew Perkins ***Cough***) wouldn't, couldn't, or didn't do that. The fact that he has access to the money to renogtiate Marshall's contract indicates he's doing a great job with one of the most important and difficult aspects of being a successful athletic director.
3. Do YOU want to try to get along with, manage, and supervise both Gene Stephenson and Gregg Marshall?? Those don't appear to be two of the easier people to supervise in college athletics. The two of them could send a lesser man than Sexton running for the nearest NAIA opening.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades. We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.
I am glad HCGM is staying. I look forward to a promising season of basketball and look forward to a valley title and tourny title and another NCAA appearance. He is a great coach and a great recruiter and I think one of the most important things is he surrounds himself with great people. He has success written all over him since I was watching Winthrop basketball games as a teenager. I believe he will win another regular season title as a shocker, a Arch madness title as a shocker, go to the ncaa tourny as a shocker, win another 25+ games in a season as a shocker, and win at least 1 NCAA tourny game as a shocker, and frankly there is no reason that can't happen next season, I don't expect it to happen but I have seen what he can do with much much less talent than he has next year, and it will be pretty :)
I am thrilled, as I guess most others are. I think it is worth remembering, apparently, HCGM likes it here in Wichita! As time goes on, I become more and more convinced that if HCGM leaves, it will be a shocker. I am tired of the inferiority complex some exhibit. Dammit, why not us? Why not have a coach like apparently Utah State has, or Gonzaga has, or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Kresse? I am WICHITA STATE and I am NOT a stepping stone!
