What was unexpected, 1972? Did you really think he'd leave? Sub and I didn't. (KC probably did, but what else is new?)

The only thing unexpected for me was that I thought the Illinois job would get filled first. Once Smart turned them down, there was word that Hamilton at Florida St and Grant at Alabama might be interested. With Illinois' reported desire to hire an African-American, if Hamilton took Illinois, that would leave Florida St open. Would Martin rather pursue that opening and if he did, or got it, would Marshall be back in the mix at USC? Would Marshall consider Florida St? I'd think better job than USC.

Nevertheless, I'm very glad for the way it has come down. Great day to be a Shocker!!

Pogo - I know you don't want people responding and wishing you luck and prayers, but I just have to say that my heart goes out to you and your wife during this difficult time. I am glad that this news about Marshall has lifted your wife's spirits. I think that all of ShockerNation salutes both of you for being loyal Shocker fans even in the midst of your personal hardships.

This is great news. I told my wife and she literally beamed. Some of you on here know what is going on with my wife. The first of January she was diagnosed with cancer. She is one of the 5% that contract lung cancer and never smoked. No one in the family and not in the work place ever. It had masticised to her brain and she has gone through radiation to reduce the lesions. We were in the car listening to one of the local sports guys asking if Gregg Marshall would be back next year. Her response was "I wonder if I'll be here next year." It was one of those moments that kind of hits you square in the face. She had a second MRI and the Radiologist showed us that the lesions indeed had started to shrink some as much as 50%. She will have another MRI in a couple of months to see if they have continued to shrink or at least remain the same. She started chemo just before the valley tournament and she insisted we make our annual trek. Although weakened we still made it to the games and to the Hill with friends. She has a treatment every three weeks and will for the foreseeable future but the oncologist thinks she will have a full recovery. I just wanted to tell everyone on SN how much 3 G staying means to us and please don't respond wishing us luck and prayers because we already know what great supportive people we have at WSU. This thread is for everyone wishing to celebrate our great coach staying. GO SHOCKS

Also, thanks to the Sycamore fan for dropping by. Appreciate the kind words. Seems like a lot of other schools around the Valley have ignorant, moronic fans that are extremely insecure. It's nice to know those fans will be insecure for many years down the road now that Marshall is planted here in Wichita.

I don't know how much Beggs had to do with it, but since he is retiring and his replacement is suppose to be named by May 1, it doesn't seem like he would be a big factor. Regardless, I am glad everything was done by the WSU administration (Beggs, Sexton, whoever else) to make this happen.

This is such great news! I have been predicting that he would leave after this season - the guy is such a top notch coach - but I'm glad that I'm wrong. Go Gregg, So Shocks!
