Truly remarkable the stark contrast between Saal and Boatright. Not sure you could find two more disparate extremes. Imagine what state the AD overall might be in if he was brought in after Sexton left instead of the internal promotion of the empty suit. I bet things would just be chugging alone like they were prior to 2016 or 2017 or whenever it was that we had early indications that the wheels were coming off. All Marshall needed was a personality as big as his to reign him back in and keep the train on the tracks. Someone who also gave at least two sh*ts about the fans, which Boatright almost treated with a degree of arrogance and contempt. Seems like Saal checks those boxes.
Like I said earlier, the few times I met Boatright I felt more him being preoccupied with something else on his mind than arrogance. After surviving the Marshall mess, I think he went to apathetic behavior followed up by immature defensiveness.

I really thought Eric Sexton was great at the one on one conversations and still is.

    • You can also withhold the funds until a later date. For instance, you can pay the student athlete say $1000 a year, and withhold $5000 until they graduate. The ability to keep student athletes here would grow with each year. Knowing you were going to give up $15-20K if you transferred might make a difference when weighing all possibilities. Obviously you can still be outbid, but it could improve your chances of retention.

      • Kevin Saal can count on one hand the amount of free lunches and dinners he’s had to himself in the first two months on the job as Wichita State athletic director. That’s because he is approaching 250 meetings with WSU boosters and Wichita community members in less than eight weeks, a meet-and-greet tour that is already rejuvenating the donor base.

          • Boatright looked like he took all of the 250 lunches and dinners in one day....

Seriously though, KS is very very very imprressive so far. Looking like a great hire, albeit still early.

Is it according to the athlete's GPA? Does the athlete have to make the "Honor Roll", or is it higher?

A 2019 court ruling established that every school is allowed to compensate student-athletes up to $5,980 for academic achievement, but it is up to each school to decide whether or not to shell out the money."

Here's a link to South Carolina addressing this earlier this calendar year.

                  https://gamecocksonline.com/news/202...dent-athletes/

I don't know how they funded it, but they state specifically that all 537 student athletes (a number which includes all full and partial scholarship athletes as well as the 150 walk ons) will get the full allowable amount of $5980 per academic year ($2990 per semester). That's just a shade over $3.2 million per year. You'd need a little over $60 million to endow that at 5%.

I would be guessing, but a number around 225 including walkons here at WSU would mean around 1.35 million per year, or just shy of $30 million to endow.

                  We got a guy there.

Stop obsessing over endowments. Especially regarding athletics.

"Alston Funds" are derived from the Supreme Court case Alston vs NCAA where the NCAA ruled that academic bonuses could be payed to NCAA athletes. NCAA allows $5,980 per year max to be payed out. WSU would have to fund it. The school seems to have a lot of leeway to decide what the criteria is.

Mizzou gives $2,400 per year for being academically eligible, and full amount for a GPA greater than 3.5
Iowa State pays a lump sum to an athlete when they graduate based on the number of years they played at the school.

Saal said on Sport Daily his concept for it is that when a player commits each year, they would receive $2,990 for the year. When they graduate from the WSU they get a lump sum payment of $2,990 x number of years at WSU.

I thought so also, and more importantly - graduate.

                            • I'm a little late on today's release.

Go Shockers - Information on Armchair Strategies

WICHITA, Kan. – Armchair Strategies is a community collective founded to create an avenue for Wichita State student-athletes to partner with local businesses and organizations on Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) activity, which is something student-athletes were unable to do until recently. This gives them the opportunity to make positive contributions to the Shocker fan base and local community, all while receiving compensation.

Through Armchair Strategies, fans are able to cultivate and facilitate opportunities for Shocker student-athletes, giving them a platform, resources and support to be successful in growing through college and beyond. Funds ensure Armchair can provide financial literacy and education, brand setup and management, secure transactions and career development for these talented college athletes.

Armchair will roll out a variety of ways to get involved. With a small monthly contribution, any Shocker fan can join the Armchair Army and receive exclusive monthly perks to support Wichita State student-athletes. Another option is the Century Club, which is an exclusive group of 100 supporters that have each committed to donate $1,000 per month to a fund used for NIL opportunities. Benefits of The Century Club include partner listing on website, annual event with athletes, membership book for networking and more.
Today's release isn't near as informative to most of us, as I think we've learned quite a bit about Armchair from them on this fine board.
