An NDA is a contract, and a contract is void if it lacks consideration. In other words, if Boatright got nothing out of the deal, he cannot be bound by its terms.
So maybe they took that as an opportunity to raise the AD's salary in line with the same position at similar schools, and thus bound Boatright to the NDA in the process.
This is just wild speculation as I don't believe the timing adds up. I think Boatright got his raise a few weeks before Marshall officially resigned.
