He is the key transitional figure for Wichita State athletics in a time of monumental change at the university, in the conference and NCAA athletics.

"We can all define where we want to be – we can say we want to have championship-level programs," Saal said. "What does that mean? Until you're able to develop a scale, understand where you are, it starts with a deep dive into every detail, every piece of data you can get that relates to how our sport programs sit, relatively speaking, to our peers in the American."

He arrives after the budget-wrecking pandemic challenges from 2020-21, and in the middle of the transfer portal and name, image, and likeness issues. (And the Gregg Marshall fiasco including the overly generous contract given to Isaac Brown)

His description of the task is to get Wichita State's resources into the best American neighborhood. The Shockers don't, he explained, need to live in the nicest house. They do need to be in the neighborhood.

"We can out-perform resources," he said. "We can develop a plan for closing gaps. We can develop a comprehensive facilities master plan to engage our coaches and student-athletes to learn what is needed, what is missing from a player-development perspective and from a recruiting perspective. When you accomplish those two areas, you've got a really good sense for what that pathway looks like."

Where Wichita State finds itself in 2022 is dramatically different from 2017 in the athletic facilities and across campus.

While the athletic department grappled with its new conference, the university boosted enrollment past 16,000 and expanded the Innovation Campus. It did so while working under two interim presidents, former president Jay Golden and, since May 2021, Muma. Add in COVID-19's stress and the departure of basketball coach Gregg Marshall and it's been a tumultuous, exhausting time.

“It’s all about championships” is meant to be a wake up call for IB. If he can’t figure it out after this season, that will be the line they use as they are escorting him out the front door of Koch Arena

Might be one more year than that unless ADKS is an amazing fundraiser ... don't think we can afford to be paying 3 coaches and 2 ADs

LMAO. I thought you were talking about Eric Wedge. He is the coach that lost 11 straight games. A losing record this year. Going 2 and barbeque in the AAC tournament. Losing an All American pitcher to the transfer portal. And attendance is a joke. A 7000 seat stadium with attendance of less than 100 people at the games. I saw a game on television this year and the stadium looked like a ghost town. Yet you want to talk about Brown. I loved that you have showed us all your DOUBLE STANDARD. The chosen one would be proud of you.

I was about to joke that you can't prove Windmills don't cause cancer.. But in my old age and wisdom I googled to check myself first, and it turns out studies have been done to prove windmills don't cause cancer.. It made me laugh.

As for IB, not sure what was going on last season with his coaching philosophies, but I highly doubt we see him continue whatever that was last year. Lol. Worst case scenario is, he truly is a level below Bruce Weber and we are stuck with him for another three years.

I maintain the worst thing for any program is a moderately effective coach aka Weber. A bad coach will be gone quickly, a mediocre coach can linger indefinitely.
