Without wandering any further down this rabbit hole, I’ll end my part of the convo by saying that there’s a pretty high likelihood that more people would be driving 100 mph with no speed limits than with them. And that’s probably not a good recipe.

      • Alaska might as well have no speed limits. All it takes is seeing a moose in front of you one time to realize just how mortal you are. 80 is as fast as 90% of the population goes.

moose strikes are especially gruesome. They also happen almost exclusively to service members. The percentage is staggering.

Kansas would have much more of an issue because the likely hood of hitting something and dying is much lower per capita.

        • My understanding of European civil engineering (not much) is that this is catching on in high density cities over there. Basically, the logic is that if you want people to drive 20, you should build a road that people feel unsafe driving 30 or 40: narrow, brick, and tree-lined. That way people don't need to check for a sign on the side of the road, they intuitively know the safe limit. Compare to something like Rock Rd in Wichita, which goes up to more lanes than the highway and certainly isn't a '40 MPH road' except for traffic and street lights.

My understanding is that US speed limits are calculated by setting speed limits as near as practicable to the speed at or below which 85 percent of the drivers are traveling, and then adjusted based on crashes, road geometry, etc. So not too different, except for guaranteeing that 15% will pay speeding fines. Lots of small towns where that is a chief form of revenue.

Service members do not know how to avoid moose or are the animals actually Russian spy instruments, like the pigeons of World War II.

Service members are sent to Alaska and can have little understanding on many elements of driving in Alaska, or rural area in general. Many are accustomed to driving as fast as they can in 2WD sports cars and when they smack a moose (moose are the size of draft horses) at 80+, the effects are haunting. There’s a lot that goes into it, but I have heard that a disproportionate amount of wrecks on the Hwy in anchorage are service members because many of them have never seen snow before.

You can tell a Russian moose by the size of its dewlap.

                        • Interesting conversation I had this week with a few coaches of xchools from several states.

The amount of transfers has increased greatly since the portal was started in 2018, and ballooned during COVID and with the slow elimination of the sit out rule.

The stories that were told are a cautionary tale addressing issues many (including the NCAA) didn’t consider:

There are many stories, but here are some examples:

                          1. Athlete left current program right away when accepted to the new school, and not being able to be eligible as he didn’t finish the courses he was enrolled in.

                          2. Athlete entered portal, and stopped participating in team events mid season, school pulled scholarship (which is within the rules). Athlete then did what he thought was an NIL deal, but was for a booster. Lost amateur status.

                          3. Athlete entered portal after proper conversations with current school admin and coaches. Did everything by the book. New school was understaffed in compliance office, needed documents were not completed costing athlete a year of eligibility. (Cleaving Hannah comes to mind although appeal was won in his case)

                          4. Athlete shows up at coaches house late one night upset because he was promised $100k in NIL deals per year, but hasn’t gotten any. Coach asks who told him that, because it certainly wasn’t the coach. Recommended he go back to person who committed to that. Athlete left school shortly after as it turns out he borrowed a bunch of money from a loan shark and wasn’t able to repay while in school.

The biggest common denominator was the large amount of stress put on the programs concerning status of students transferring in and students transferring out. Keeping track of scholarships, eligibility, etc. Trickle effects still coming to light.

                          • My take on NIL……a lot of these kids think just because they are college athletes money will freely flow their way. NIL is just an opportunity for them to capitalize on their “fame” and not get penalized by the NCAA for earning money in college. They have to pursue opportunities. Very few of them, only the most highly coveted, will have stuff put in their lap. They have to actually do something to make this money, maybe even put forth some effort to find their own sources of income.
