I wish it were so. It's not all bad. Shocks can still sell out the barn. We'll be able to watch the games. There will be conference tournaments and an end of year tournament. Hell, it may even be the NCAA tournament as the big dogs might have their own "Gatorade Basketball Invitational" or some such.

      • Still having Memphis and SMU in the conference will help short term. Problem is they are likely to be next man up for when the next round of re-alignment happens (which could be in the next 2-3 years). Barring some amazing additions, which don't seem to exist unless we add west, we really would be back to a Valley level league at that point. So, yet again, really hoping Boatright isn't actually just riding it out with the AAC and not even doing the work to find us a better liferaft.

EDIT: Reports are being floated by people connected with B12 schools that there in an internal push to go ahead and add 6 so they end up at 14 once OU/Texas leave. Memphis might be gone sooner rather than later.

        "From Sic'em365---

SicEm365 has learned that there is push from active members of the Big 12 that the final addition total should be six programs and that the league should make the additions immediately.

If the decision is made to add six—with BYU, Cincinnati, UCF and Houston slotted in as the first four additions—Memphis and Boise State look to lead the way as its final two additions. With an eventual departure of both Oklahoma and Texas to the SEC, six new programs added to the league would bring the total membership of the league to 14 with presence in three time zones."

We can blame any number of ADs, Presidents, or alumni, but it is what it is.

In ten years you'll have to look for our games against OCU and UNO like Australian Football. Thanks to the internet they'll be there, but the casual fan tuning in to a Tuesday night ESPN2 matchup? Nah.

Does it suck that the Vanderbilts, Rutgers, Wake Forests, Washington States, and Kansas States of the world get a free ride on homesteaders' exemptions? Sure it does. But, life ain't fair.
We’re better off now with AAC Lite than we were as a MoVal member. They’ll be additional movement, possibly programs dropping football as the P4 (pac, acc, B1G, Sec) take control of the football landscape leaving opportunities for a powerful public school BB conference.

Short term disappointment may indeed lead to long term opportunities.

If something like this happens it will be an apocalyptical event for our program. In that scenario we wouldn't be ill-advised to pay the Pee a $20M entrance fee. It would have nothing to do with getting a return on our investment, it would merely be for survival.

The other choice would be to beg the Valley for readmittance. Then our program and fanbase would descend into a state of apathy for the rest of our lifetimes.

                Things are definitely looking grim.

You seem to be getting too much enjoyment out of your statement.

The one bright side if they poach Memphis and Boise is that the MWC would lose it's best football school. They might be more open to a merger of some sort for survival (would be a 16 team conference). That could be a pretty good BB conference. Colorado State, Utah State, San Diego State, New Mexico, UNLV, Nevada, Wyoming ... all of those teams are normally above average teams. Wouldn't be the home run of the Big East, but would still be the best possible scenario from a BB standpoint unless Aresco opens the door for BB only adds.

                        From you?

                          So much doom and gloom.

None of this would impact us if we had just been content to be a bottom feeder like we were in the 90’s. That’s “our level” according to some on here.

lol, the closet KU fans are starting to come out.

                          • Traditional institutions as we knew them are slowly eroding one at a time. Anyone who thinks we can just continue status quo is fooling themselves, it's just a matter of time.

I don't disagree with the first part

Regarding the second, I think you could find enough lost toys to make a very competitive basketball conference, but will the money or eyeballs be there to support the travel? Maybe for the direct programs. Certainly not for Olympic sports or baseball.
