  • DWill continues to be fantastic. His defensive effort is unmatched, and again last night, nobody moves the ball around better than he does.

6 assists (that number has to be low) and zero turnovers. Everyone talks about how good Grant Gibbs is at CU, and DWill is every bit as good, and a much better defender.

Toure was all world last night. Dominant. Stutz was better than his 10 and 12 would indicate at first glance. He did look a little tired to me....so I was glad to see him get some much needed pine time.

    Now, go take what's yours!

These calls were rally killers and NIU made some nice 3's to take full advantage of the mysterious help. Maybe it was my rose colored glasses steaming over from frustation on all of that nonsense??? Or was it just me?
And to think, there weren't that many fouls called in the whole game.

      • I thought DK was amazing tonight. And not just because his shot was back. He made some great plays on both offense and defense besides just shooting it well. I thought that his effort was an awesome display of a senior leading by example.

I love this from the second article:

The points resulting from defensive mistakes were one thing, but the constant badgering from the Shocker fans turned into another. Even when UNI made its run and cut the deficit to three points, it was hard to keep things quiet.

As Jacobson noted, they'll find any excuse to stand up again. Wednesday night, Toure' Murry provided a perfect one, nailing three straight jumpers to make it feel like the opening minutes all over again

If they scored assists in basketball like they do in hockey, Garret would have earned a triple double!

DWill currently leads the Valley in assist-to-turnover ratio (conference games only).

              • Another thing that made me smile last night, was right as halftime was coming to a close, UNI's head coach came through the tunnel in the Student section and started to be interviewed by someone in the valley right at the opening of the tunnel. All of us students in the lower 10 rows starting yelling and making it very difficult for the interview to continue. It was great

                • BTW, I loved the exclamation point James Anacreon put on last night's win with his steal and breakaway monster dunk.

Not sure if James will ever amount to a solid D-1 basketball player but the young man does have some serious athleticism. The kind o young man who would have benefited greatly if he could have gone D-1 right out high school.

                  • Please, no one take this wrong. I thought TM played great D and he dished out 5 assists with only 1 TO. I knew he had scored in double digits and his 4 straight made jumpers in 3 minutes was fantastic. I, too, felt he was a dominant force out there and knew that he had not taken a 3 pointer all night.

However, was anyone else surprised that, outside of those 4 straight jumpers in 3 minutes, he was 2-11 FG the rest off the night? I didn't believe my eyes when I saw it in the box score last night. I also noticed that during our 6 1/2 minutes of despair, where our lead went from 21 to 3 points, he missed no shots (didn't take any) and had no TOs.

So, apparently, missing shots while your team goes 78-35 over the other 33+ minutes can hide effectively hide a 6-15 shooting night, particularly when you go 4-4 in building back a lost lead.

                    • That's his line a lot of the time, no surprise. That stretch was as good as anybody, ever, tho, and that's what took them out. I thought Cotton and DWill both defended better, fwiw.

I wasn't surprised. Everything he threw up in the first were bricks. Some shots were ok shots. Others were forced ones with zero chance of going in (reverse air ball). I brought this up in the Creighton pregame thread as well.

Your first paragraph says it all. Those were the best parts about his game last night IMO. His sweet pass to Joe for the layup under the basket in the first half was excellent. That's more of the TM I want to see.

The one real negative I hate to bring up is his defense. I think his defense abilities are overrated at times. Yes, he can lock on, but I've been trying to watch TM more on defense lately, and he is absolutely getting pummeled on the defensive end... at least in blow-bys. Now granted, TM usually gets the best offensive player with his size matched up with him so that doesn't help, but TM has a tendency to get beat very bad and is constantly playing catch-up with defenders, leaving them with wide-open jumpers. There was one in particular in the first half when I think TM was packing it in and sagging, leaving UNI with a wide open jumper that was buried; he didn't even bother to recover.

Now, I'm not saying he is the only defensive liability at times on our team. His offensive game is improving and he is playing smarter. I just think sometimes he is given too much credit on the defensive side. If you have the game on the DVR, rewind it for confirmation.

I agree with you about catch up. Last night, Murry kept sloughing off Sonnen and all the while, Sonnen kept making 3 balls. Murry could not recover in time. Sonnen does not need much space to get his shot off. He is pretty quick that way.

I didn't realize they had done that until I watched the DVR replay of the game today. I like seeing the students get creative.
