From the poll in the Politics Forum, I'm one of the least concerned about Corvid. I'm in the age range that is susceptible, but I have none of the underlying conditions that have been associated with the fatalities. I know that I can mail order toilet paper over the internet. My retirement is not invested in the stock market. I will be conscious of hand-washing when I'm out in public places. I will watch out for people with sniffles or coughs. I will use wipes on grocery cart handles BEFORE I drag the cart over to the dispenser.
I'm disappointed that the basketball off season has arrived early. I was hoping for a few more weeks. I'm disappointed with all the cancelled events, but it would be absolute foolishness to expose anybody to this unnecessarily.
This is a new disease and little is known about it. Italy has confirmed 10,000 cases - and that happened FAST! The USA has performed tests on 11,000 people, so we have no idea how many people might have it, how it's spreading from areas with infections; nor what type of stats there might be for transmission rates, severity of instances, or fatality rates. I think this is as much the fear of the unknown as it is the fear of the virus. Being overly cautious is the best practice when you don't know what you're dealing with.
If I were an 80-year old smoker with heart disease and diabetes, I would be very, very afraid. Bacteria and viruses can survive in the air for up to 45 minutes after a sneeze. Viruses are so light that any wisp of wind can keep them airborne. You could walk through an area where someone sneezed a few minutes before you got there and inhale viruses left in the air. That gets a little scary for people in the high risk demographics. The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

Would you then think they should be implemented every year since they would save thousands of lives?

That would be the "worst doctor" scenario I mentioned earlier.
BTW, this is my last reply on this. If you want to have a "Pardon the Interruption" type discussion, look elsewhere. This is more serious than opinions.Last edited by KraRam; March 12, 2020, 10:36 PM.

We have a lot of fear of the unknown. That's pretty much self-inflicted. We declined using the WHO's testing, which S. Korea is using to test 10,000 people a day. We developed our own test. It didn't work. Our next test worked, but the number of people getting tested is unbelievably low. We've tested 11,000 people. S. Korea tests 10,000 every day.
Insurance companies say they will pay 100% of the testing without co-pays, but they haven't said they would cover the ER costs to get the samples to test. I don't know if I believe any of the stories of what ER's are charging to collect the samples. I've not heard insurance carriers say they would cover the ER charges.
I've heard some unbelievable ER charges, but if the ER has to use HazMat protocols those outlandish charges might be justified.
Those without insurance and those with high co-pays will not seek medical attention if they get a non-debilitating version of Corvid. That's going to put people with the virus into the general population.
Health care for all is an unpopular subject for many on these forums. Those without health care can easily become carriers for illnesses that might be fatal to you or your parents. If health insurance is not required for all, it is a certainty that there will be people with diseases like this who will not seek medical attention. That creates a danger for you and me.
It's a little like having auto insurance that protects you from uninsured drivers. You have to pay more for those who refuse to pay and for those who are irresponsible. With health insurance, you have to pay more for those who cannot pay more. The alternative is that you let them infect the rest of the population with diseases. The loss of a life is a lot worse than having you Mercedes totalled.

As much as I am in support of his methodology re: ranking teams, it doesn't look great when he acts like a cheerleader for KU instead of a beat writer."In God we trust, all others must bring data." - W. Edwards Deming
