An abundance of time sensitive work kept me away during the game and this board mostly yesterday, and from what would have been a highly enjoyable watch party. I was hoping to stay away from the civil war that ShockerNet has become, but alas I am not that disciplined.
FWIW, and I admit that ain't much, I am putting very little stock in yesterday's outcome. I am extremely happy for the players and coaches, and as a fan I continue to look forward to post season play, hopefully the big dance.
But I don't think anything was fixed yesterday in the last 14 minutes. SMU's defense was atrocious as was their coaching. Even when we went zone (and I've watched the staff teach the zone and where people are supposed to be) we were out of place more often than not. Not intentionally, but our defense most of the last 15 minutes was predicated on hoping SMU would miss shots. Also, we're not going to beat anyone firing up 3s all the time. I agree it's all about matchups, and I'm not saying we're Alabama A&M, but we have struggles that haven't been fixed, and frankly aren't going to be fixed, at least not this season.
AND TO ME AT LEAST, that's ok. I find this team super easy to support. They aren't perfect, but from my interaction, this is a really good group of young men. Sure, there aren't any Freddys or Bakers out there, but again, to ME, so what? They're still pretty dang good, 22-7 on the season, I enjoy watching them play and like I said, my interaction tells me they are really polite, friendly and sharp young men. I believe they also, as a team, set a program record for GPA this year. Those are all good things, all things that, at least to me, are important and all things I can support.
What to take away? To remember, and RELISH in enjoying the ride. We get too caught up in where we're going to be, what our prospects are for finishing in conference, in FT. Worth, what tournament we're going to be in and how far we'll go. Whatever happens, in 5 weeks it's all going to be over, for every team. Will you have enjoyed the ride? I will have.
And that doesn't mean you can't be critical or talk about the future or anything else. And I'm NOT calling out anyone, but I'm going to use ShockerFever as an example. I like Fev, a lot. We've butted heads at times, and that's ok too. But sometimes I fear he's so concerned about being right next month that he's not enjoying today. And if I'm wrong, then I'm wrong. I KNOW he's a huge WSU fan. Almost everyone on this board is. We are fans in different ways and THAT'S ok.
Enjoy the ride.....maybe just a tiny bit more than you do today. And I'm talking to myself as much or more than I am talking to anyone else. I feel like too many of us as fans, myself included, have reached a point where winning is so expected that we hardly celebrate it. We worry a lot more about NOT winning than we actually enjoy the winning we do, and today that's a 3-1 ratio.
And yes, I know we have to win too, I get that. Just remember, the other guys want to win too.
Anyway, GO SHOCKS! Beat Memphis!
