Hope I am wrong. Hope it sells out. The opener Sunday did not sell out, though. I assume that maybe half of the season ticket holders will go to IBA. No idea where the others will come from, they were not at Koch.

Anyone see this deal yet? They are offering 50% off face value. So for $47 you can get two seats in the lower bowl.

I've seen multiple preseason rankings that have shown Memphis, Marshall, UCF and Tulsa. That would put them 5th. I believe I've seen Rice ahead of them on one or two rankings. My only point is that this is not the premier noncon opponent in Wichita as you and some others have been saying. Solid program yes, but not expected to be all that great.

Are we comparing UAB to the right opponents in judging whether this is a good game or not? To the best of my knowledge the choice this year was taking this game or finding another Chicago State, UMKC or Division II opponent. So if that, in fact, was our choice then I think it was a good game to take. Whether or not Shocker fans in general will support it at IBA outside of the season ticket package remains to be seen.

If Shocker fans do not support this event adequately and we are unable to put this kind of opponent on our schedule at Koch (which may very well be the case in many years) then we may be faced with more bottom feeder buyout games at Koch Arena.

Sure I would prefer a highly thought of BCS opponent to UAB. However, that is not the preference the UAB game presents this year. The real question about this game is do you prefer the UAB at IBA game outside the season ticket package vs a bottom feeder buyout home game at Koch Arena? I prefer the UAB at IBA game myself.

I'm not sure a poor turnout for this game will condemn future games at IBA but it will probably restrict us to playing there only for the most select of opponents which may or may not be forthcoming on a regular basis. It probably will eliminate the UAB type of game in lieu of a bottom feeder home game.

Except UAB is also a team that we could get at Koch.

              1) We are probably unable to put that kind of opponent on the schedule at Koch for a "one and done". A home and home is a whole other matter (CU is playing UAB H/H). Keep in mind, there are probably very few quality opponents you will get at IBA for a one and done as well. That leads to #2.

              2) We have now set the bar for where like teams (UAB) or better may only play WSU....at IBA. And in most cases, they will want a return game at their "neutral" site. I wouldn't plan on seeing teams like Texas Tech or Providence at Koch as in the past. These BCS teams will want to play at IBA here and at their home court there. Most quality, and well know mid-majors, may only do neutral and neutral now. I'm not saying whether this is a good or bad thing. However, outside the BB or conference challenges (MVC/MWC), don't plan on any thing other than buy-in type non-con games at Koch.

The one caveat to this is if WSU is able to string together at least 3-4 years of good success...winning the MVC, winning the MVC tourney, beating quality teams at neutral sites, and continually making the Dance and going beyond the 1st round. Then that could put us in a better bargining position.

I did not realize that was an option we actually had. I guess I missed that information.

Excellent post 72. Again, I keep asking where have all these home and home's with great opponents have been. And I keep waiting, and waiting... No answers. I guess that means that point goes to me?

Apparently, a lot of people, including high-end Shocker fans on here, would rather play the Chicago States and Texas Southerns at Koch. UAB is just not worthy enough to spend any additional money on for a game in Wichita. Truly sad.

UAB above UCF and Rice? No. I'd even put them above Marshall. They should be a top 3 team this year in CUSA. I guess we'll have a chance to gauge that game when they play Creighton at home coming up.

That was a one-time thing in which UAB was probably pretty desperate. I sure haven't seen many home-and-home games better than UAB in the last few years. Care to name a few? Outside of Tulsa?

How many times does it have to be explained that an outside promoter came to WSU for this game, NOT the other way around? There is NO bar being set when an outside promoter sets up the two teams and the game. You seem to seriously fail at understanding this concept, ST. Maybe once you finally understand that, you can stop wasting about 75% of your postspace on this subject.

Amen. As I've asked on previous threads without reply, do people want the athletic department to say no when offered a huge sum of money to play a top 100 RPI team at Intrust?

Didn't WSU host UAB a couple years ago at Koch, or am I mis-remembering?

This new deal they are offering makes me feel so warm and fuzzy (since I layed out $80.00 per ticket). I'll enjoy the game anyway. Even retired, I guess the money crunch hasn't hit me as hard as it has some, but I certainly don't have enough to just throw it away (or I just consider the Shocks a priority).

The "they" in this situation is a promoter, not WSU. "They" are in business to make money. Set the prices high, see what the market will bear. Offer discounts as necessary to sell more tickets. This is the way independent productions will work. I too paid $80. However, I got to pick some very good seats. Not sure I could have done that by waiting for discounts.
