Apparently, a lot of people, including high-end Shocker fans on here, would rather play the Chicago States and Texas Southerns at Koch. UAB is just not worthy enough to spend any additional money on for a game in Wichita. Truly sad.
UAB above UCF and Rice? No. I'd even put them above Marshall. They should be a top 3 team this year in CUSA. I guess we'll have a chance to gauge that game when they play Creighton at home coming up.Originally posted by ShockerFever View PostHow many times does it have to be explained that an outside promoter came to WSU for this game, NOT the other way around? There is NO bar being set when an outside promoter sets up the two teams and the game. You seem to seriously fail at understanding this concept, ST. Maybe once you finally understand that, you can stop wasting about 75% of your postspace on this subject.
So your saying that sCUm could get a H/H with UAB but we couldn't?
How many times do I have to tell you that I understand it's a third party promoter. The part that you seem to fail to grasp is that WSU still had the option of accepting the game or not. So, if it fails and causes WSU to not be able to get "real" quality games (ones that the average fan has an interest in), it is WSU that made the final decision to do the game, they're the ones who took that part of the risk.....not a "show me the money" this game risk, but the risk that others are so worried about if it's a poor turnout. By the way, I don't necessarily agree with that position.
I must admit that I am somewhat surprised that you manage to berate WSU's athletic department at almost every turn, yet on this subject, you fail to see that they, in spite of all the potential pitfalls that could hurt attendance, did have a hand at whether this game was to happen or not.

You can keep telling me you understand but you're not showing it. As @The Mad Hatter mentioned, WSU should have turned down guaranteed money, a Top 100 opponent to be played in Wichita for.... what? A home game with Texas Southern? What do you think the other alternative was? Do you really think there was a better option out there? Or did you want to continue to pad the home schedule with fluffy puffs? I'm guessing the options were pretty thin, considering we had to waste another home spot on NEWMAN. That tells you something right there.
Since apparently this game was a fail by WSU on every level, explain to all of us what the better option should have been and what would have been the outcome. If WSU turned down this game, considering our scheduling challenges, then I would be calling for the athletic department's head. There's a lot of blame to go around in the athletic department. This is NOT one of them.Deuces Valley.

2) Show me where I said they should have turned it down. Never said that and I have no idea what, if any, alternative there was. All I've said is that if they weighed the +s and -s and decided this was the best option, and worth the potential risk of a poor turnout (given all the possible negative factors) and negative effect on future, bigger games at IBA, then so be it. That was their decision. If games at IBA is as important as it appears to be for HCGM and WSU and this game would have an impact on that, I just think they are taking on a fair amount of risk and to put all the blame of WSU's fandom if there is a poor turnout is wrong.
3) I don't know what you mean by a fail on every level, but they should certainly shoulder a good portion of the blame if a falling flat on attendance hurts furture games at IBA. You and I are not the Average Fan, we should know that, WSU should know that. WSU reading and understanding their fan base is part of the athletic department's job.

1. LSU wasn't a home and home. Tech and TCU I wouldn't consider to be better than UAB. Not even close actually. The last two years I was looking to specifically.. where are they?
2. The only blame to put here is the WSU fanbase's apparent lack of interest of Shocker basketball in Wichita. Are average fans really coming to see the opponent or the local team? I dunno about you, but I had fun watching WSU put on a clinic Sunday afternoon against a low-profile Big South? school. We get another chance at that at IBA, with an opponent about 200 points up in the RPI range. The only thing I can have sympathy for is the ticket prices, which were pretty high. Now that there are deals galore about, I would hope the financial thing isn't that big of an issue now for WSU fans, average or not. Again though, there is no risk for WSU, money wise or image wise, in this game. Now fan image wise was a risk, but that's something only the fans control, not the WSU administration.
3. No. It's up to the WSU fanbase to stop crying over seating placements and just get to the damn game. WSU doesn't look bad in this. The city of Wichita is the one that looks bad. Not only does it show poor support for future WSU opponents at IBA, but also NCAA Tournament potential here. If WSU can't even get 10,000 to IBA for a game involving their team, how can they get 15,000 out to watch other basketball be played in the NCAA's? There are a lot of factors going into this that seem to go unseen.
I personally CAN NOT wait to get this game over with and played so we can move on. It's apparent none of us are gonna flip our positions in the matter.Deuces Valley.

It's really sad to me that more people will pay to watch K-State (barely got past CS) vs West Virginia (just lost to Kent State) than will pay to watch the HOMETOWN TEAM against a comparable opponent. Is there a whole lot of difference between WSU, KSU, WVU and UAB? Does it come down to the fact that K-State fans are more loyal or have more money than WSU fans - in our own city? How sad...

Yay!! Well said. I still think in the end turnout will be great (not a sell-out, but great), but all this bickering about seating, opponents, IBA, and whatever else we've argued about here has frustrated me to say the least. I would go see the Shockers play Girl Scout Troop #213 in a cold wet dungeon in a heartbeat. I want to see the Shocks play, I don't care who the other team is or what stupid building we're playing in. I know I'm not an average fan, but the city goes nuts and turns 5 shades of yellow when we make the Sweet 16 or win the NIT, but when it comes time to put our money where our mouth is and support the team, we get all defensive and threaten to stay home in droves. I am shocked (pun intended)."It's amazing to watch Ron slide into that open area, Fred will find him and it's straight cash homie."--HCGM
