These conference wins would be huge boosts for NCAA Tournament hopefuls
ANDY WITTRY | NCAA.COM |
DECEMBER 29, 2019
"...That allows us to circle a handful of games for these teams as the most important remaining regular season games, regarding the potential boosts that wins would provide their resumes. We went through the latest NCAA team sheets of many of the top teams in the country, plus some other NCAA Tournament hopefuls, and found conference games that would be huge boosts to their NCAA Tournament resumes.
As a reminder, the NET rankings are updated daily here, which means that the quadrants of past and future matchups can change between now and the end of the season. Quadrant 1 games are those played at home against opponents that rank in the top 30 of the NET, neutral-court games against opponents that rank in the top 50 and road games against opponents that rank in the top 75. You can read the full quadrant breakdown here.
We wrote about teams' remaining schedules based upon the NET rankings of their opponents through games played on Dec. 28....
Memphis (No. 13 NET) at Wichita State (No. 10 NET) – January 9
Wichita State at Memphis – March 5
Wichita State (No. 10 NET) and Memphis (No. 13 NET) are the American Athletic Conference's top two teams in the NET, which means the conference at large should benefit from the two schools playing twice in the regular season. Wichita State will host Memphis in early January, then the Tigers will host the Shockers in early March, and as long as both schools stay ranked in the top 15 of the NET, each opponent will represent not just a Quadrant 1 win for the other, but a high-end Quadrant 1 win (home games against opponents ranked in the top 15 of the NET) – the best win available in college basketball. Memphis enters conference play with a 2-1 record in Quadrant 1 games, while Wichita State is 1-1, so both schools could use a resume boost in the top quadrant during conference play. Each team represents the opponent's only remaining chance to pick up a Quadrant 1 win at home in the regular season...."

A Quadrant Two win is an at home win against a team with an RPI 31–75, neutral court win 51–100, and an away win over RPI 76–135 teams.

And if you're going to be so dumb as to use the rating of a teams opponents to evaluate a team, then JUST USE THE ****ING RATING SYSTEM.

Two 13-1 teams with both top 25 and top 13 (at least) in NET. Still can't imagine a bigger game for the week. Good stuff!!!
The game will be either on ESPN or ESPN2, with the game likely to be on the Flagship ESPN. The only game that might be in competition would be Unranked Purdue at #11 Michigan. Both teams will have the potential to move up the rankings after this weekend once they take care of business against the teams in the SEC/AAC Challenge.
This Memphis at Wichita State game is going to be a barn burner!!!

"Former Wichita State guards Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet were among the 25 players named Monday afternoon to the Lute Olson All-Decade Team. The team – which highlights some of college basketball’s biggest stars from 2010-19 — was selected by a voting panel of 21 Division I head coaches, four athletic directors and six senior members of the College Insider staff. The Lute Olson Award, named for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame coach, is given annually to the best player in Division I college basketball.
Baker and VanVleet, fittingly, made the team together. They shared the backcourt for four seasons (2012-16) and helped lead the Wichita State program to three conference titles and nine NCAA Tournament wins in four trips, including a 2013 Final Four appearance. A year later, the duo played a key role on a 2013-14 Shocker squad that logged the first 35-0 start in NCAA history and claimed the program’s first-ever No. 1 seed. Both were three-time first team All-Missouri Valley Conference picks and both went on to play in the NBA.
Baker – a 6-foot-4 guard from Scott City, Kan. – was a two-time Lute Olson All-American (2014 and 2015) and finished his career ranked among the school’s all-time top-10 in points (1,636), three-pointers (242), assists (345) and steals (163). He is currently playing professionally overseas after parts of three NBA seasons with the New York Knicks and Washington Wizards.
VanVleet – a 6-foot point guard from Rockford, Ill. – joined Baker on the Lute Olson All-American team in 2015. He was a two-time winner of the Larry Bird Trophy, awarded to the MVC’s player of the year, and he remains WSU’s career leader in assists (637), steals (225) and assist-to-turnover ratio (3.08). The two-time Bob Cousy Award finalist (national point guard of the year) suited up for 120 Shocker wins (tied with Tekele Cotton for the most in program history). Last spring he helped lead to Toronto Raptors to an NBA Championship...."
