She should be, as should the known and potential redshirts on the men's team. Personally, I'm bummed that I'll miss the women's scrimmage with my Thursday schedule, but pumped that I should be able to make all of the men's scrimmage.

    • I'm not sure whether Darice is allowed to play in a public scrimmage or not. The rules may be different for a transfer vs a redshirt candidate.

        • I think I can interpret:

I hope that Darice (Fountaine - Kapaun grad and transfer from Savannah State) will be playing in the Ladies scrimmage. Just to show Shocker fans what we can expect from her over the next two years.

I was thinking that transfers were allowed to participate (just as they could in a normal practice), but I'll admit to not have definitive knowledge on that.

            • don't see a problem with her being able to play,it's just a scrimmage...Everybody so hype on the means team (honestly excited to see (Wessel,Baker,Hall). But I think the women's team will make some noise, poised to do some great things in the valley. With a player like Lankster......Anything is possible,O and a good coach in Ms Jody :)

I was trying to remember if Gabe Blair participated during his transfer year. Unfortunately that is too much to ask for someone with CRS disease.

Edit: Gabe sat our the 2008-09 season after transferring from Eastern Carolina. I looked at the 2008 Shocker Madness thread and their was no mention of Gabe playing in any of the numerous and occassionally quite detailed post-event comments. I'm not sure him not playing was due to NCAA rules or for some other reason.

                • Why do I have this thought that Gabe was injured and unable to play?

                  • The same question applies on the Men's side to Malcolm Armstead and Joe Mitchell. Will we see them on the floor at Shocker Madness.

I remember the same, he was. I think I remember AJ Hawkins playing during his year he sat out.

You guys have a better memory than I do by far. I believe RHshoxfan is on target with his recollection about AJ.

The Hawk sat out the 2007-08 season. Here is a video of the 2007 Shocker Madness dunk contest in which AJ participated:

and based on the comments in the ShockerNet post-even thread AJ did play.

So, assuming the rules have not changed we should get a look at Malcolm, Joe and Darice assuming the are healthy.

                        • Pretty sure Joe Mitchell will not be playing. They are going to be taking it very easy with that concussion. I believe Malcolm will play.

                          • I think the Shocker Madness is considered just another practice, so I don't see why we wouldn't see our transfer players who have to sit out this year. They can participate in practices now I think.

                              • Today's report by Paul Suellentrop shed's some light on why Shocker Madness was delayed a couple of weeks into the season and why it is on Thursday.

"We keep hearing that people want to see these kids play," WSU coach Gregg Marshall said. "I'm just not one of these guys that is big into dunking and three-point shooting contests and riding around on motorcycles. We've got a lot of work to do."

"Guys will have X amount of practices now, so there will some semblance of organization and not just pickup basketball," Marshall said. "If you do it (to open practices), it's just basically a bunch of hoopin', which can deteriorate into playground."

3G appears to be approaching this as a serious part of their pre-season preparation and not just a show. I really like the fact that it will have a much more game-like organization aspect than the traditional roll the ball out and run up and down the court event. Maybe we will actually be able to take some reasonable conclusions away from SM this year.

The Shockers usually end practice with short scrimmage sessions. This will be their longest scrimmage during preseason practices and a marker for Marshall. WSU will meet Texas-Arlington in a closed scrimmage and practice on Sunday at Koch Arena.

Once the decision to delay SM a couple of weeks into the practice season the fact that they are scrimmaging UTA on Sunday pretty much eliminated this Saturday as a possiblity. Also the Lady Shocks Volleyball team is playing #12 UNI at home Saturday evening in perhaps the biggest home match of the year for them.

I will be at Shocker Madness and at the UNI Volleyball match.
