"More Than One-Third of Preseason Top 25 Teams Fail to Win an NCAA Tournament Game" - HERO Sports

    By Andrew Doughty
Published on October 22, 2018 at 3:06 PM EDT

HERO Sports is the go-to website for college football analysis and predictions with an emphasis on the FCS and G5.

"Since 2006, more than 100 preseason top-25 teams have failed to win an NCAA Tournament game that season....

Arizona was ranked No. 3 in last year's preseason AP Top 25. Wichita State was ranked No. 4, and USC was No. 10. None of those three teams won a game in the 2018 NCAA Tournament, nor did eight other preseason top-25 teams.

Last year's futility -- seven non-tourney teams plus four more without a tourney win -- was unusual, but it's still common for preseason top-25 teams to flounder. Since 2006-07, 301 teams have been ranked in the preseason AP Top 25 (Michigan and Utah tied for 25th in 2014-15). Of those 301 teams, 110 have failed to win an NCAA Tournament game, or 36.5 percent. Forty-seven of the 301 teams missed the tourney entirely, or 15.6 percent.

Postseason success has been especially tricky for teams ranked 17th and 21st. Only 50 percent of the last 24 teams to be ranked in those two spots made the tournament. And only 37.5 percent of teams ranked 17th or 21st won a tournament game. Oddly, 12 of the 13 teams ranked 25th have made the tournament and nearly 50 percent of those 13 teams won a game...."

I think, even if we drop some games in the non-con, our KenPom rank will increase. Wichita State is 100th in AdjD, if we return to the PlayAngry style D, that should increase, hence boost our rank.

This season will be full of highs and lows and the learning curve will be sharp, were so young. But it will be fun to watch Marshall do what Marshall does best and that is teach and motivate and get us back to toughness and defense. We might not be in the conversation and rankings, but it will be fun to watch with all this young talent.

I for one am going to totally ignore National Rankings this year and simply enjoy seeing the improvement in this young team from game to game.

                I lie a lot, too.

Unless, of course, if the Shockers are ranked then you will monitor their rankings very closely.

"Duke tops, Kentucky plummets in Andy Katz's Power 36 college basketball rankings (Nov. 12)" - NCAA.COM

                    BY ANDY KATZ | CORRESPONDENT
                    NOVEMBER 12, 2018

A dominating win over Kentucky to open the season made it clear the Blue Devils are a title favorite. The win over Army Sunday was closer than anyone projected. But these are still freshmen and they are mortal.

                    19. Purdue: My preseason player of the candidate Carsen Edwards opened the season with a 30-point standout show in a win over Fairfield. He followed that up with 23 in the win over Ball State.

                    26. Wichita State: The Shockers were picked in the lower grouping in the American because they lost so, so much. The season-opening loss to Louisiana Tech was a sign that it could be a rebuilding season. Not so fast. The Shockers, led by Markis McDuffie’s 32, beat Providence in Annapolis.

                    34. Virginia Tech: The Hokies don’t have suspended Chris Clarke playing, but do have plenty of scorers as five were in double figures in the opener.

                    36. Houston: The top of the AAC will have a rotation of teams. UCF took a hit with a home loss to Florida Atlantic and Cincinnati lost at home to Ohio State. The Cougars played a weaker opponent in Alabama A&M but cruised to a 101-54 win behind Armoni Brooks’ six 3s for 24 points.

"Duke still No. 1, Michigan vaults in Andy Katz's new Power 36 rankings (Nov. 19)" - NCAA.COM

                        BY ANDY KATZ, CORRESPONDENT
                        NOVEMBER 19, 2018

"This is the time of the season when you’ve got to earn spots in the Power 36 and any other poll. This isn’t a list of who is in and who isn’t in the tournament as of right now.

And quite simply — Syracuse, Villanova, Wichita State and West Virginia — four teams that were in the poll last week — didn’t get it done this past week to hold their spots. So, they’re out for now. Don’t worry, though, I’ve got faith they’ll all be back here shortly.

                        Here's the newest Power 36....

                        27. UCF (NR): The Knights slid out of my Power 36 after losing at home to FAU. But then UCF proved that was more of an anomaly by winning the Myrtle Beach Classic in South Carolina with a Sunday win over Western Kentucky. They are the team to beat in the AAC.

                        36. Houston (36): The Cougars are still waiting to challenge themselves. But fear not, this squad can ball. It’s just a matter of time before everyone sees they are an AAC contender. The first real test comes next Saturday at BYU.

The most important win of the week:
UConn over Syracuse: The Huskies win over the Orange at Madison Square Garden will do wonders for Dan Hurley. He needed a validation win for the fans and he got it against one of their longest rivals in a hallowed space in New York City. The Huskies have the talent to be a top four finisher in the AAC. But the win over the Orange will have shelf life for the rest of the season...."

The AP likes the program led by Mark Few more...probably what it really comes down to.

Well, I would, too -- maybe the voters like that Few has never been caught actively texting and coordinating with a guy paying bribes to players. But considering the number of voters who make up the AP poll, I'm not sure the idea that "the AP" likes Few's program more makes a lot of sense.
