Interesting. Not sure I would have pegged that fan base putting Spin at the top.

Mike DeCoursey of the Sporting News was on 810WHB this morning was very critical of the Mark Turgeon hire by Maryland.

While DeCoursey thinks Mark is certainly a good coach, he thinks Mark has not proven that he can coach at that (Maryland's) level. Maryland is a program capable of winning national championships, and Mark has never proven that he can recruit the level of players that can win national championships, or that Mark could coach at that level. As evidence he pointed to aTm' s mediocre conference records and even Mark's 4-12 record against Dana Altman.

Interesting to hear someone use the "at this level" characterization towards Turgeon instead of Turgeon using it about a school and/or conference.

DeCoursey also said that Frank Martin would have been a better choice than Turgeon.

In 13 years as a head coach, Mark has exactly 1 regular or post season championship to his credit. Regular season champs of the MVC in 2006.

Great pedigree, fantastic connections, solid fundamentals, warrior spirit, outstanding character.

Mark is a really good coach, and a better person, but his biggest accomplishment, so far, is parlaying that track record into a steady progression of jobs and salaries probably not befitting his record.

And he, and everyone else involved, should be embarrassed by what's becoming a regular description as a "2 time Big12 Coach of the Year".

Mark's better than that, and it should stop.

After some speculation about whether or not he would be interested in Texas A&M, Gregg Marshall will stay at Wichita State.

So where do things go from here? Well for Wichita State it means they keep an outstanding coach for another season on the midst of an NIT Championship. Of course, as many will continue to say, it's only a matter of time before Marshall is ultimately offered a BCS job that is just too plush to pass on.
I'll take this, as we've discussed ad nauseam, it's better than the alternative of having a coach not regarded as "outstanding" by the talking heads and other basketball programs.

And yet more recognition of an NIT Championship... pretty sweet...

                  ---- BEGIN RANT

Maryland is a program capable of winning national championships, and Mark has never proven that he can recruit the level of players that can win national championships, ...
Weak. Larry Brown hated recruiting and won a national championship. Recruiting matters more to WSU and Texas A&M than it does to Maryland. At Maryland recruiting is _easier_, not more difficult.

... or that Mark could coach at that level.
You mean this isn't any indication that he's capable of rebuilding Maryland:

"With a 73-31 record in his three years in Aggieland, Turgeon has placed his name among the elite in a power basketball conference. The only coaches with more wins in their first three years at a Big 12 school are his mentors at Kansas, Larry Brown (83 in 1983-86) and Roy Williams (76 in 1988-91)."

                  Oh and:

"In facing a school-record 12 ranked opponents and overcoming a devastating injury prior to the start of the new year, the Aggies went 24-10 and finished in a tie for second in the Big 12 with 11 wins. Turgeon's team earned a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the second round for the fifth straight season."

Yup, sounds like he's not ready to take over a _terrible_ Maryland team that didn't even make it to the NIT last year. Apparently he is more suitable to stay at a lowly TA&M that he has taken to the NCAA's to the second round 4 times in a row, but not rebuilding the premier Maryland out of their post-seasonless eliteness.

As evidence he pointed to aTm' s mediocre conference records ...
Third place in the Big-12 conference, and losing to the second place team in the semi-final game is mediocre?

And placing SECOND in the Big-12 conference the year before and losing to the number one team AGAIN in the semifinal is mediocre?

As evidence he pointed to . . . Mark's 4-12 record against Dana Altman.
Oh I forgot, did Mark have to pull WSU out of it's worst decade in history in order to compile his 4-12 record against Dana Altman, who happened to be in his hottest stretch at Creighton? That Mark won ANY game against Altman shows how much of a stud Mark is to even get us to the point we COULD win those games.

Somebody please remind me how many Sweet-16s Altman has coached in?

DeCoursey, whoever you are, instead of just trying to pile on with stupidity please just be honest that you don't like Mark for some secret reason and show a modicum of intellectual honesty.

Turgeon may lose all 3 Maryland recruits

Sources say they have all asked to be released from their LOI.

Not surprising at all. They want to play for a run and gun, uptempo play style. Turgeon is taking over a team that is suited for a different play style. The best thing is that its easier to take fast athletes and conform them to the slow paced, defensive style of Turgeon, rather than the other way around.

Apparently they are nervous they will be overworked because now they may actually have to play in the post season.

So what if, instead of honoring their LOIs, the three young men follow the coach that recruited them to his new location (sitting in front of the bigscreen drinking beer and eating nachos)? What are the recruiting ethics on that one? :)

I would say the recruits just want to explore their options, and to make sure that Turgeon's style of play is going to coincide with what they want to play.
                              Not unusual under the circumstances.

Turgeon going to Maryland does seem a little odd to me though, but if he is successful there, and there is no reason to believe he won't be, then it might position him to take over for Self at Kansas at some later date. Mark is a good coach, although I did think he made some dumb ingame decisions while he was here, but he helped build WSU back to a respectable position again, and the sweet 16 run was an exciting one.
