  • I know I read Spin was headed for Maryland as soon as he didn't get the aTm job. However, I find it interesting that the Maryland basketball site still shows all 3 of Williams' assistants along with MT on the coaches page. At least aTm had taken Spin off their coaches page as soon as it was announced that they were hiring Kennedy. They are still showing Williamson and Walker.

Question -- If a head coach is successful enough to get a "better" job elsewhere, is it unusual to not take most or all of your current coaching staff if none are replacing him at the old job or headed for other head coaching positions?

      Pooh Richardson, I'm guessing.
I think that is Pooh Williamson.

I'd guess it's as good a time as any to make changes to your staff if something isn't quite clicking without having to fire someone. If you believe you can upgrade, you should jump on it. You only get 3 official assistants, so you better make the most of it.

As for the assistants, it's also a great time to re-examine their own priorities, and could find a better fit with another head coach. They've got to build their own resume, and continuing to work for 1 guy may not give all the experience they need to get that head job, even if that 1 guy is going to be successful.

          Thanks for your input.

I guess the reason I was asking: 1) If the head coach got a "promotion" due to previous success, that success most likely came about due to the success of his assistants as well; 2) The lateness of this particular coaching change could make it rough on those assistants you left behind with fewer opportunities available (thanks for helping me get this big pay raise...bye).

Leaving two assistants behind (one can certainly be understandable) seemed odd. No doubt, MT is getting as much east coast recruiting experience as possible and has done so. He has protected himself well from what I would assume to be a shortcoming being at Maryland. I hope Williamson lands well...he shouldn't have a problem.

          • The other assistant was an AAU coach wasn't it? Didn't he demote Coach Rohn to DOBO when he got to aTm so he could hire the AAU coach and land a big prospect? Was Rohn still there?

Actually, I think the AAU coach had left already (big surprise), Coach Rohn is an assistant to Boyle at Colorado, and Walker, the other assistant, came from Minnesota and was given some funky title until room came about to make him an assistant.

Ahh. I'm glad Coach Rohn found himself a nice job with a good coach. I liked him.

                  • Probably, the Shockers are just a dot in Coach Turgeon's rear view mirror.

                    Sorta like Coach Parcell.

Good luck Mark in your new venture!
