Although I have respect for Turgeon, after being surrounded by Maryland grads for the 6.5 years of my life I lived in the DC area, I will never root for those arrogant jerks regardless of the coach. I'd rather endure oral surgery.

I hope Turgeon received a whole lot of money, because the cost of living, housing costs and the taxes in Maryland will eat it up most of it. However, if he were to live in Northern Virginia, he would find life most pleasant.

Coach Self is 48 years old.
Right, he'll have to be very patient. But I just googled this and find it interesting:

      Roy Williams 15 years
      Larry Brown 5 years
      Ted Owens 19 years
      Dick Harp 9 years
Some dude named Phog -- forever

Bill Self has already been there 8.

If Turg can put together a good run over the next 7 to 10 years or so in the ACC -- and that's a big IF -- then he'll have a shot at least. Not to say some other stud won't be next in line, but at least he'll have had his opportunity.

You never know, all it will take is a couple of KU thugs causing them to get put on probation and all of a sudden Self isn't the hot commodity he has been. Not saying it's gonna happen, but the recent track record isn't great.

I wonder if he will be able to use his "Best we could get at this level, sorry :(" line at Maryland?

Leaving Wichita State was easy? I should remind him of the tears when he was asked about his players at the A&M press conference.

Nevertheless, it's going to be VERY hard for me to cheer for Maryland. I hate Maryland. The only 2 things I ever liked about Maryland are Scott Van Pelt and Mark Turgeon. It's going to be VERY hard to cheer for them.

              But I probably will.
Let me just say, Doc, IF 3G were to leave WSU to take the aTm opening, I would hope for nothing less than a complete crash and burn for MT and the Maryland basketball program. And given the timing, I wouldn't be pulling for aTm either.

Turg did a lot for WSU and I will never forget that. But I am so glad we don't have him any longer. He is bound and determined to be exactly like Larry Brown in the way he handles his career.

I hope the fans at Maryland understand that when Turg feels he can find his next better opportunity he's out the door. Not a ton of loyalty in his blood I guess...

When he walked into College Station, he confronted a fan base that merely looked at basketball as a bridge between football and spring football. That simple distinction was his eventual undoing.
Too many differences for Turgeon, A&M.
Wow, that's a great article. Great perspective.

                  I wish him well.
I've always hated Maryland... so wishing him well there is quite difficult..

After reading that article though, I don't blame him for leaving. Didn't sound like a great fit.

Nothing about this changes how I feel about Maryland or how much success I want them to have.

3G is NOT going to aTm

Well maybe not over, but no longer advancing. It's do or die now.

Yeah, because most people just stay in 1 job all their lives...when a better opportunity opens up, they don't take it.

Mark Turgeon is as loyal as any coach who has not yet ascended to his dream job. A&M got him to his dream conference, but not the dream job. I'm very happy for Mark and very proud of him. He has proven, over the strong criticism of many critics that he can coach and recruit anywhere. I wish him the very best. He brought WSU BB back from the dead and for that he should have a bronze placque in Koch Arena! Maybe he will schedule Maryland and WSU home and home! Give him a call Gregg. :posterwsu:

Was there really that much apathy towarsd basketball at A&M. What were the attendance numbers and what % of filled capacity etc? Turgeon and A&M seemed like a natural fit.

Reed Arena seat 12,989 people and A&M averaged 9,000 in attendance last season (69% of capacity).

Interesting. I've seen some Oklahoma U basketball games over the years that weren't even half full with attendance. I guess if you're at a football school, and the BBall team isn't top-20, nobody cares (Tennesse U has good basketball support though, I believe).
