  • Wow Wu, you have already speculated about Cotton leaving and he hasn't even set foot on campus.

      SG: Wessel (SO), JUCO
SF: Richardson (JR), JUCO, Vautravers (JR)*
PF: White (SO), Ellis (FR) and/or Thurman (FR), Walker (SR)*
C: Orukpe (SR), Hall (SR), JUCO

      * = walk-on
Richardson is a question. If Ellis is on the team he won't be coming off the bench. Neither will Hall or EO. I think Wessel is a SF. I feel confident that Williams, Wessel, White, Hall, and Orukpe will be on the team. No reason to believe Cotton will leave, but he will likely be third string this year. It's hard to know if he'll be around. After that it's all huge questions.
I listed Wessel as SG because it looks like we will be inexperienced and short-handed there; I agree that Wessel looks more like a 3 than a 2.

If Ellis comes here, he probably will earn a starting spot but it's never good to assume a "raw" (no RS) frosh will start IMHO.

I agree that "Richardson is a question."

I thought about putting in Hall as the starting 4 but where does that leave Ellis or White? If Hall starts at the 5 spot, then I don't think EO will fully develop; just as Stutz got a lot fewer minutes than Durley. We look deep at the 4 spot; the 3 & 5 spots might be questions and who will be our guards in 2012-13?

My roster was probably completely wrong but I don't know who we will bring in to replace guards Murry, Kyles & Ragland, center Stutz and wing Smith. We'll return Williams (& Richardson?), Orukpe and some walk-ons and add Hall, White, Cotton & Wessel; it doesn't look like we will have "any" experience to start the 2012-13 season.

      • Guys, all this speculating on rosters for the next 2 or 3 years is ridiculous. Don't you realize that many of the players and most of their family read this board? Show some respect to these kids. TRich has done nothing but show that he's a supportive player to the team. Other than the fact that he hasn't played much, there's no indication at this point that he's gone. I'm sure coach will let him and everyone else on the team determine their fate. Over half our team next year will be filled with players that haven't seen significant D1 court time, if any. As far as I'm concerned, there are a lot of minutes to be had and may the best men win.

If a squadron of F-22's flies by setting off the building's sprinkler system, on a certain Jewish holiday leaving one drooling for bread, while playing basketball against Tyrone Shoelaces -- would you be witness to a passover, flyover, crossover dribble, dribble, dribble?

          • It's hard to predict fully what '12-'13 will look like considering we look to still add one for this year. That one could change a number of things the following season depending on position/type of player he is.

            PG: DWill (SR), Cotton (SO/RFR)
            SG: ?
            SF: Wessel (SO/RFR), TRich (JR)
            PF: Hall (SR), White (SO)
            C: Ehimen (SR)

That's six openings as of right now. Cotton and DWill may both be capable of playing the 2. Wessel as well. With 6 spots to fill, we're looking at at least 1 at every position. With the one this year, I think we should be looking at a guard/wing of some kind. With the other 5, I'd hope at least 3 were FR for the season we're discussing.

I have no real idea at this time, but the staff has their work cut out for them. The next 6 we bring in are going to be a big deal to this program as a whole.

Not speculating that he'll leave, just not willing to put him on my 2012-13 roster. I tried to add an explanation for why I left him off my "sure things" for 12-13. Notice the remark, "no reason to believe Cotton will leave." Kids that don't get to play sometimes leave. I don't think he'll get to play next year, not because he isn't capable (in fact, I expect him to be quite good) but he will likely be a third stringer due to experience. Also, with his primary recruiter off to greener pasteurs (I think) he might not be compelled to stick around to back up DWill. I almost left White off my list, but I feel quite confident that he will earn minutes next year, so I left him on. Wessel stays due to being an early verbal and home town kid.

If TRich stays (and I hope he does) he will still have little playing time. That makes him a viable transfer again next year.

I went the opposite route of Spanglerfan in that he predicted who would be coming in. I predicted who I didn't think would leave.

So under this logic, Sean Ogirri finished his playing career at Wichita State, since he was getting playing time.

Acting as though playing time is the sole determinate of whether someone is likely to stay or go makes little sense. At any given school, there may be players sitting on the bench that are happy to be at the school they are and players who are starting that may be looking to leave.

Trying to predict which camp any given player falls into without inside knowledge year to year is very difficult. Trying to project out beyond the current year is pretty much useless. There are just too many variables at play to make intelligent guesses about these things. In and of itself, this wouldn't be harmful, but when discussing players' futures, such speculation makes it far to easy to treat college kids as commodities that we predict will be swapped in and out of the lineup rather than human beings with the ability to make their own decisions about their futures.

                  • Predicting a FR will leave because for that one year he happens to be behind a bunch of veterans is a bit confusing. Cotton may play or may redshirt next year, but he has plenty of PT available following that and he appears to be a pretty good player anyway.

I understand the TRich talk a bit because he didn't get to show much (behind a lot of veteran talent) but if he doesn't transfer out this year, I don't see him ever doing it unless he goes D2. But he seems to be pretty happy hear.
