Not speculating that he'll leave, just not willing to put him on my 2012-13 roster. I tried to add an explanation for why I left him off my "sure things" for 12-13. Notice the remark, "no reason to believe Cotton will leave." Kids that don't get to play sometimes leave. I don't think he'll get to play next year, not because he isn't capable (in fact, I expect him to be quite good) but he will likely be a third stringer due to experience. Also, with his primary recruiter off to greener pasteurs (I think) he might not be compelled to stick around to back up DWill. If TRich stays (and I hope he does) he will still have little playing time. That makes him a viable transfer again next year.

I went the opposite route of Spanglerfan in that he predicted who would be coming in. I predicted who I didn't think would leave.

So under this logic, Sean Ogirri finished his playing career at Wichita State, since he was getting playing time.

Acting as though playing time is the sole determinate of whether someone is likely to stay or go makes little sense. At any given school, there may be players sitting on the bench that are happy to be at the school they are and players who are starting that may be looking to leave.

Trying to predict which camp any given player falls into without inside knowledge year to year is very difficult. Trying to project out beyond the current year is pretty much useless. There are just too many variables at play to make intelligent guesses about these things. In and of itself, this wouldn't be harmful, but when discussing players' futures, such speculation makes it far to easy to treat college kids as commodities that we predict will be swapped in and out of the lineup rather than human beings with the ability to make their own decisions about their futures.

Not speculating anyone will leave. I tried to make that clear.

Guys, all this speculating on rosters for the next 2 or 3 years is ridiculous. Don't you realize that many of the players and most of their family read this board? Show some respect to these kids. TRich has done nothing but show that he's a supportive player to the team. Other than the fact that he hasn't played much, there's no indication at this point that he's gone. I'm sure coach will let him and everyone else on the team determine their fate. Over half our team next year will be filled with players that haven't seen significant D1 court time, if any. As far as I'm concerned, there are a lot of minutes to be had and may the best men win.

To speculate regarding any player staying, leaving or whatever is juvenile and a waste of time.


I mention this every year about this time but here goes again.

It's nice outside folks. Get out there and enjoy it.

It won't be long and the weather will turn ugly and you will scurry back to your humble abode, hibernate and once again and follow Shocker basketball.

Then what exactly were you speculating? If your post wasn't about who might be leaving, why post anything at all?

I was speculating on who I expected to DEFINATELY be in Wichita in two years. I am very much aware that it is hard to tell who will be on a team in a few months let alone two seasons from now. I am also aware that this is an exercise in futility, but it is the off-season. I stated in my very first post that I didn't expect Cotton to leave. I stated in my second post that I expected big things from him.

My initial post was a response to a post that predicted Gavin Thurman and Perry Ellis to be in Wichita in two years. Nothing wrong with that, but I was trying to point out that we have very few knowns in two years so I kept my list extremely short. I should have left Cotton on there.

Go back and reread my three or so posts in this thread. Cotton was unfortunately listed as a possible transfer only because sometimes that's what kids do and I made a wild speculative guess that he would be the most likely since he lives the furthest away, would have the most competition at his position, and because his primary recruiter is no longer here. To think we would keep this entire recruiting class together is unlikely, only because that rarely happens.

So it is up to you to decide what everyone else should think about during the off season and anyone thinking about something that does not interest you "is juvenile and a waste of time". Thanks for the insight. Now I know that I should not keep an eye on the media during the baseball winter trading season either as it is off season and certainly "is juvenile and a waste of time". Please advise: Is it okay (as a big Cardinal fan) for me to be interested in the July 31 trading deadline in baseball since it is during the season? Just so I totally ignore the trades made during the Winter Meetings in December?

It is really comforting to know that we have all-knowing people like you to tell us what we should think about. After all, it is no doubt a horrible sin to be a Shocker basketball fan year around.

Guess what. I guess I choose not to change just because of you. I'm afraid that I am interested in what the Shocker roster will look like next year whether you think it is juvenile or not. Even if you think it is a waste of time, I am interested in whether Guy Landry becomes a Shocker. I am also interested if a 2nd player comes because there is an opening, which would only occur if a 2nd player (other than Jerome) leaves. That does not mean that I hope anyone leaves. I have stated that my gut feeling is that TRich will leave, but I have certainly not said anything about wanting that to happen. I only want TRich or any other Shocker player to do what is best for him and I'd love to see him graduate as a Shocker. In fact, I would rather him stay than go. However, if he does choose to leave, I do have interest is who might take his place on the roster.

Maybe you should take over as the monitor so you can delete posts that are "juvenile and a waste of time" in your opinion. Or, maybe you should go out and enjoy the outside since it is so nice out and not spend your time being offended by "the dreaded off-season" posts.

There is a huge difference between being interesting in roster developments (including both new signings and departing players) and wild rumor-mongering.

I think most of us here are keeping our eyes peeled over the off season for these developments. That is a different thing entirely from half the board deciding that it is really important that everyone knows their hunch about who is leaving, even if none of them have any actual information to share.

You might claim that expressing your opinion on who you think might be leaving is not the same as wanting that person to leave, but that doesn't change the fact that such speculation often does give the impression of a certain amount of callousness towards the player in question. This is particularly true when you combine discussion of recruits with discussion of departing players. Given how excited people can be when talking about recruits (which fades once the player is actually on campus), speculation about who might leave to open a scholarship can easily come across as wanting to get rid of one player so that an exciting new recruit can be brought on.

I am certain that this is not the intent of most who post such opinions, but these discussions almost inevitably lead down that road. Better to stick to actual news about roster changes than to speculate, even if with innocuous intent.

Last night at the awards banquet, Hamilton was not there (which is no surprise) and Coach Dollar had left that day for Georgia and was not there. However, Tyler was there with the team. That may or may not be an indication he will be here next year. If he had not been there last night, the speculation would have run a bit higher that he would not be here for next season. I, for one, hope he is. I don't think we have seen just what Mr. Richardson can do when given some good minutes on the court. I'm looking forward to it.

As if this means anything... But I'm Facebook friends with Tyler and he was very vocal about his support of the team via his Facebook. Before most games he was saying something about getting the win tonight or something. Team guys are important for every squad. I hope he stays.

You sir, are correct. I think many on here see the limited production (with walk-ons), remember that he was a later signing with little to no publicity and want to cast him aside.

He was playing behind a lot of veteran guards and is young. He could end up being a valuable role player. If he were to leave, this would be his best time to do so considering he could go JUCO for a year. If he were to transfer later, he'd have to sit out and lose a year. Personally, I'd like for him to stay. He seems to be a good kid with some talent and could have a positive influence on this team.
