Burton wasn’t happy about coming off the bench after starting his freshman year.

3G said he needs to be more careful about what he promises to recruits and make sure he can fulfill those promises. He expected either MO or AM to leave. Doesn’t expect any more defections. Likes the core that stuck around.

    • From the very good Athletic article:

Marshall would like to add one more big man and then use his two final scholarships for players who would sit out next season, most likely transfers. He does not expect any more players to leave. Dennis could consider testing the NBA Draft waters, but he has told Marshall he’ll be back.

Marshall also is trying to be more careful with his message in recruiting. Trying to make sure they aren't promising things they can't deliver and trying to make sure the get guys who value team success as much or more than individual accomplishments.

      • Besides what other posters have shared, he said he wasn't surprised by Stevenson's transfer, and understood Fernandes and Gordon leaving, since they were basically 3rd string and wanted more. He expected one of MU and AM, but hoped to "salvage" one of them.

While the outlook is different than anyone expected, Marshall still has the makings of an NCAA Tournament team. As one coach said in a text to The Athletic, even with everything that was going on behind the scenes, the Shockers were in position to make the NCAA Tournament. “Marshall is a helluva coach,” the coach wrote.
I want to put in another plug for The Athletic. If you don't have it, that's why you need it.

Sounds like Burton was pretty much pissed form the beginning when Sherfield was quoted saying that Marshall had told him he wanted him to be the starting point guard right away and be a leader. In mid-January Burton told The Athletic that when you start as a freshman then come off the bench the next year behind a freshman that will piss you off.

For those of you that havent' done it already, i think if you install the app and set up an account you get 3 free articles but the The Athletic is well worth the money

This the best (or second best) confirmation that Dennis will be back we had (Taylor also said he didn't expect he would leave but hearing it as a direct quote to Marshall is awesome)

Was there nothing said about what a big meanie coach is? Nothing about his temper? Not caring about the boys feelings? Nothing?

                    • So if a player leaves because of playing time and not starting, that particular players rationale is not coach is being to hard on me. It’s just I should start. Instead of proving it, you transfer. In case of JB or GS, neither proved it on a consistent basis. I think this coach squeezed every win that could have been squeezed from this group-don’t you 76?

it kind of pissed me off too to be honest. Especially after a handful of games and it became apparent that GS did not hustle or play hard consistently. I also do not think he was quick or as good of a shooter as advertised and am not convinced he really wanted here anyway

I think we will be fine

Coach has learned that he should recruit guys who are team-oriented. And, if that's not enough, has decided that he shouldn't promise things that he cannot deliver on.

So it wasn't what you were hoping he would say even if it's likely the truth?

                              • Marshall said he had hoped he could salvage the freshmen, Fenandez and Gordon, but they were buried They were 3rd string at best and they wanted to play and they are good players.

Marshall implied that part of the problem was this all hit at about the same time that everything was shut down for the virus an the payers all dispersed and that made it more difficult to deal with all the issues.
