  • Mike Piazza was drafted in the 62nd round. Very last selection for the Dodgers. There are many similar examples.

    • I think the exceptions highlight the fact that the draft can be very flawed at times. Of course, it can be flawed as well in the college system. An example there is Evan Longoria who had NO scholarship offers to play college baseball out of high school.

        • As I recall Mike Lansing played for an independent team similar to the Wingnuts before some major league team picked him up.

Sure and you can find examples of people winning the lottery, but that doesn't make your odds any better (which are 1 in 195,249, 055).

If your not drafted high and a MLB team hasn't nothing invested in you, then you know that player is very most likely not ever going to sniff the major league.

When Tommy Lasorda was in Wichita for the WSU Baseball kickoff dinner a few years ago he told his story about Piazza. Piazza was drafted pretty much as a family favor (god father was Tommy Lasorda) so he could say he was drafted by MLB. But he wanted to sign and give it a shot. I'm also sure having ties with Tommy Lasorda helped him get a little more of shot than the normal person taken in the 62nd round.

I was agreeing with your point, SB. That's why I highlighted that sentence. Pujols was one of those exceptions.

Tommy may have gotten Piazza to the door, but Mike pretty much beat it down getting to the bigs in 3 1/2 years. For a catcher with power, his stats were never bad in the minors and he was huge his last year (.350, 23 HR, and 90 RBI and also hit 29 HR the previous year).

              • Brien Taylor is the other side of the coin. #1 overall pick in 1991 and only made it to AA.

I agree. It is what you do with the opportunity that counts (not just baseball).

In Mike's case, I think he learned about HGH, masking agents, and cycling :)

                            Go get 'em.

One thing Cody does bring to the table is that he has experience calling his own game.
