Not bunting? Any chance it is a combination of Gene not confident that the young man could bunt successfully and thinking that 1 run would not be enough with the current state of the bullpen?

A pretty good counter.
Playing devil's advocate, I can see that just a bit, especially with this team.
BUT, in that situation, you don't argue with basic mathematics. You just don't.
Deuces Valley.

Gene just does not like the bunt and he doesn't make a big secret about it.
In this particular situation, if you are not confident that Josh can get a good bunt down then you should pinch hit for him with someone who can.
Gene may also have remembered back to 2nd and 3rd with nobody out and Lassley up earlier in the game, and been afraid of getting NO runs if he gave away an out. So I can understand not bunting, especially when there's been no evidence yet the pitcher can throw three strikes.
Decisions always look bad when they don't work, but that doesn't mean they were wrong at the time they were made.
