THAT'S 36 BY MY COUNT TIME TO TRIM

    LET THE DRAFT START TRIMMING

I would prefer the trimming be of our own doing but no doubt the draft is going to do some damage. Unfortunatley, the draft trims from the top down not from the bottom up.

Always liked that WSU wasn't a school that brought in 100 guys for open tryouts every year.

      Guess that is changing.

If you want the draft to do the trimming, we will have a crappy team every year.

Im with you on that cdizzle. Im not trying so start the whole Gene debate again but that was also one thing i liked about him was he tried to stick with his guys, probably to a fault. Hopefully this is because he was expecting to lose alot of the juco players this year and it does not become a regular occurrence.

I am of the opinion that College Baseball could stand a major overhaul. Perhaps if you could offer full scholarships you would keep more talent out of the high school ranks. As it is 23% (8 of 35) of your roster will be walk-ons by rule and the other 27 players will receive an average scholarship of 43%. With Juco players eligible for the draft and eligible after only 1 year of time in your program if they do come to play using that option to build a program is not the way you generally want to go. Then there is the seasonal factor that weighs heavily in favor of the warm weather schools.

In any case if Hilliard, Tinkham, Kihle, Rader, Hayes, Williams, Anderson, and Schwanke get drafted and decide to move on and if our incoming freshman class takes a significant hit from the draft then next year good easily be as bad or worse than this year. Williams is a RSo. but he is already 22 years old so he is draft eligible.

I am hoping we only lose a couple of our Juniors and a couple of our incoming freshman to the MLB draft. We definitely need to start getting this program built from the high school level and we need a couple more years to see if that can happen. All of these guys could use some work and refinement on their games but whether they will have the option to do that in college or in the minors remains to be seen.

We will have Sam Tewes back next year and hopefully Willie Schwanke. I think Chase Williams should come back for one more year but his age and "potential" might cause him to move on if he gets drafted high enough. Cody Tyler will also be back in the mix next year coming off TJ surgery. The Coaches have spoken highly of him but talk doesn't mean much.

With what I expect MSU and DBU to lose to graduation and to the draft I think the Valley will be much more wide open (and probably down quite a bit) next year. So depending on what happens to the Shocks with the draft we could be contending for a Valley title or we could be back in the muddle of the middle again.

1972 - I agree with everything you said, there is also a problem if the draft doesn't take a huge toll. I didn't go through and review Shocks10's list but if we are really at 51 that means we would have to lose 16 to the draft or start cutting. I have lots of concerns either way. If we lose a lot to the draft that means we will have lost most of the players that had significant playing time this year. If we don't lose a lot to the draft we are looking at cutting 10 - 15 players. That is between 1/3 and 1/4 of the entire team. I'm afraid if that happens that will have a significant impact on our future recruiting...

Someone mentioned in a previous post all of the Fr and So on the team. The problem is not many of them saw significant playing time, and the ones that did weren't consistent enough to stay in the lineup (Vickers and Troutwine are the obvious exceptions).

Just like Marshall I'm sure Butler can count. The basketball team has been making adjustment in the roster that are just as significant. I don't see Marshall worried about recruiting.

I guess I just haven't adjusted to this over recruiting and turning over 1/3 to 1/4 of the team every year when it's not due to graduation or draft. I follow college sports instead of pro because I like the concept of recruiting and coaching players not offering scholarships to incoming players every year and pulling them from guys that a year or two ago you thought were good enough to recruit but now you see something shiny and new. Free agency drove me from watching pro sports and now college is becoming more and more like that.

I don't envy these college baseball coaches for having to operate in the environment they find themselves in. It can be a real guessing game about who you will have back among your draft eligible returning players and which of your incoming recruits may not ever set foot on campus. If you wait to find out for sure and you get whacked big by the draft you're kind of screwed on finding replacement players. And the puzzle seems to constantly changing shape. 4 to 6 weeks ago everyone thought Sam Hilliard was a lock to be back. Not so sure about that know. 4 weeks ago Ryan Tinkham seemed like a lock to be gone. Now I am not so sure.

Coach Butler talked in detail about this on his last coaches show. Sounds like these coaches have to spend an immense amount of time playing this guessing game.

I think DBU will also lose several key players to the draft and graduation. Unless our roster turns over in a big way we should be able to compete for the top few spots in the MVC next year.

Coaches have always had to deal with this. It looks like they played the game of "let's over recruit to solve the problem" rather than played the guessing game. By my count we will have 31 Fr and So next year (before the draft). Does that mean we will only sign 4 players in next two recruiting classes? Obviously something will have to change.

It is clear Coach Butler feels he needs to win right away and can't take a chance of being short players by only recruiting what you think you will lose (guessing game 1972 mentioned above). I think if this is a one-time issue for a new coach we will all forget about it over time. Now if we bring in 15 new players every year, my opinion is that you aren't a good recruiter, you are just over recruiting and cutting the ones that you were wrong about.

Here are the incoming recruits with their Perfect Game rankings for high school players at the time this class was announced last November. Those rankings of course probably have changed some since that time.
