This was an unfortunate statement to make and will live in Shocker "infamy" for years to come.........
"we’ve done all we can do at Wichita State”
It does make a statement about Gene's perspective on Wichita State. The ironic fact is that Gregg Marshall has shot holes in his logic. Modern day Wichita State has a very high ceiling.

Had he been able to bring in a younger guy (or even a head-coach in waiting) who was hungry to make a name for himself and go out and recruit far and wide (like Marshall surrounds himself) - things could have been different.

Gene and his staff always heard 'sure you can win in the MVC but it would be different if you were in the Big 8 or Big 12'.
From complaints that Gene made many times that recruiting to Wichita State was so difficult, and how they were overcoming the inadequacies of the university, I definitely took his infamous statement to say that we have won a NC and been successful for many years, and the decline from our top perch is inevitable and happening as we accept this job at OU where we can again achieve success because of the resources that we will have at our disposal.

I couldn't care less if the AD likes our coaches or if our coaches like our AD. What I do care about is going to that amazing stadium that Gene built (maybe more than any other single person has ever done to build a college program) and not see his name associated with anything. It's a travesty that should embarrass every WSU player and fan (past or present) and ADES has to own that!Last edited by shockfan89_; May 29, 2015, 01:38 PM.

Sure Gene was difficult to deal with, Marshall can be too, that is why they are successful. It was/is ADES' job as a leader to find common ground with difficult coaches and work with them, explain to Gene that ADES wanted the winningest all time coach in college baseball to be at WSU but for this to happen he needed to hire a younger assistant or coach in waiting. Instead of contributing to the decline by not extending Gene's contract, ADES should have extended it with a provision in place to hire a coach in waiting (like maybe a Hooper). Be creative, don't tarnish a great legacy by also being stubborn.

To try out, does an athlete already have to be an enrolled student?
I know that preferred walk ons have been invited to be a member of the team, just without the benefits of scholarship. They are essentially recruited and are team members...right?

I follow college sports instead of pro because I like the concept of recruiting and coaching players not offering scholarships to incoming players every year and pulling them from guys that a year or two ago you thought were good enough to recruit but now you see something shiny and new. Free agency drove me from watching pro sports and now college is becoming more and more like that.

I get the guessing game of the draft. I would think you would build a stronger program by building a consistent program of players who buy into your program, are committed to the coaching staff and build a solid brotherhood with a focus on playing together, building a winning program, and staying with a program for at least 3 years in the hopes of possibly getting drafted. Watching the past 2 years I get the heavy feeling of inconsistency, disarray, players who lack confidence in what their role is for the first half of the season and then they settle into their role and start winning some ball games. The "guessing game" should be at the end of each season with the excitement and anticipation of the draft, not at the beginning of each new season when everyone including the coaching staff is trying to figure out the roles of each new player and who to ax after they have been promised the world. Parents and Athletes really need to take a hard look at what they are stepping into before they throw away one year of eligibility, unless they enjoy entering into a "Las Vegas" crap shoot.
