    That's a fair point.

People demanded perfection in a changing climate of college baseball. Gene slipped a few years but never to the point where we are now. I'm gonna go ahead and say that injuries were a pretty big factor this year. But man, BBIQ was pretty damn low too. That's a bit disconcerting.

Assuming major contributors come back next year, 2016 will be NCAA or bust IMO.
    Deuces Valley.
    ... No really, deuces.

Thank you for asking sir Fever, Who knows, it's not my job to figure it out. WSU has an athletic director for that, not a very good one, but one nonetheless.

Personally, my vote has always been for Hooper or Standiford. I'd be more willing to support them than I do Butler. If the Shox turn it around under Butler, I'll give him his props, but I still won't care for the guy. Just because I don't care for the coach doesn't mean I have the answers. How about you go to our athletic director for that. As it stands, I think you and I can both agree that the BBIQ of this team is terrible and it probably won't get any better any time soon.

WSU had an RPI of 62 and SOS of 109 at the time of selection of sunday. Not many teams get an at-large with that type of RPI and SOS.

Well those darn facts. Thanks SB, I probably shouldn't be posting on SN the day after our season ends and for sure not after a night of drinking!

          • The worst part about the WSU baseball situation is, WSU used to be tabbed "a baseball school" as much as we all adore the basketball teams success, something just seems to be missing. Success is difficult to achieve in any sport, perhaps letting Gene stick around those last 10 years was a mistake?
It just seems like WSU baseball is trapped in a vortex of dispair and Sexton either knows how to fix it and just simply doesn't have the resources or he doesn't know how to fix it.

So let me get this straight. The entire coaching staff was signed to 7 year contracts? If that's the case then no one is going anywhere anytime soon. I just don't think anyone with influence or resources cares enough to buy out all of these contracts. Seems like some of the passionate baseball guys on here are still dialed in but the overall passion and interest in this program is dead. You could tell Friday night watching on espn3 seeing a completely empty stadium.

I can understand not being there Friday because of the weather, but Thursday was great weather. It's sad to see how many fans have given up on this team

Do you think people have really "given up" or are they reacting to limited finances (basketball keeps costing fans more and more every year and the economy has tanked faster than WSU baseball). Obviously people bought tickets this year after the fire sale.

I think people will be back as the product on the field also improves. The first 40 games of the season were hard to watch even for fans that love college baseball and bleed black and yellow. I personally felt the excitement building the last third of the season and I think weather also killed the conference tournament (although WSU games were pretty much played on schedule).

Everyone on this board knows I am plenty critical of some past decisions and sometimes project too much of that baggage on the current coaching staff. I will always be a fan of WSU baseball. I spent more money this year to support the baseball program than I ever have and will likely up that support for next season. I think next year will be much better if for no other reason than we will play an easier schedule and the Valley appears it will be considerably easier than this season.

                  • The Gene bashers on here should.be ashamed. The man gave his whole career to us. We wouldnt be even talking about this if it werent for him. Baseball was the only thing we had in the 90s. And finally we'll be lucky if we get back to the records he had in the last ten years! And he did not leave us for his home university. Who do some of you think you are?

Isn't that Kemnitz? Butler's had one recruiting class. I feel we're falling into power 5 football mentality: win now or leave. He needs a few more years.
I believe I recall that the reason we only had (2) Seniors this year was because Coach Butler told most of the Juniors early in the season last year that they either needed to get themselves drafted or find another place to play baseball, so Jerig Seig (sp) is playing for Tabor, Bobbitt at Emporia and Zaier to some school in Oklahoma. It will be interesting to see how many juniors either get drafted or "move on" this year.

                        • I consider Shane Dennis to be the most insightful baseball mind on the radio. His knowledge of the game is unparalleled in my opinion. I'm sure he picked up some of this knowledge from his college coaches.

Like many others I'm concerned with the low BB IQ the team displayed this season. Regardless of the talent level it takes a mentally tough and high BB IQ team to consistently win games over the course of a season. I'm not sure the current coaching staff has what it takes. It will be interesting to see how things play out next year.
Shocker fan for life after witnessing my first game in person, the 80-74 win over the #12 Creighton Bluejays at the Kansas Coliseum.

There's a reason 90% of the seats in the stadium are empty all season long. This program has been on a downhill slide since the back to back super regionals. Nobody wants to come out and watch a team that used to compete for titles year in and year out and now has a baseball IQ that is seriously lacking. Nobody wants to come out and watch division 1 baseball players make mistakes that they should have gotten out of their system years ago, head coach included. The mentioning of coaching styles of Adams and Butler is spot on, previous players are just not being interviewed

If I haven't made it clear that Im not the biggest Butler fan, I'll say it now. I'm not a fan of Butler, I thought it was a terrible hire from the beginning, and I doubt if I'll ever be a fan of Butler, even if he were to take the Shox back to the promised land. He just rubs me the wrong way, kind of like Jody Adams and the women's team.

I want the baseball program to succeed just as much as the next guy, and I'll support them as well as I possibly can. At the risk of ruffling feathers, I don't see myself ever throwing my support for Butler.

For the record I wasn't the biggest Gene fan either, I thought we made a mistake by letting him come back after he took the OU job.
The mention above of coaching styles comparing Adams and Butler is spot on. Good observation Shockerfanmas!

                            • I am not as knowledgeable as others on what makes a good teacher/talent developer in baseball coaching, so I will continue to say that whether Todd turns out to be successful remains to be seen. I have great hopes, but the proof will be in the pudding.

That said, I am completetely befuddled as to why Todd "rubs people the wrong way" or is compared to Jody Adams. I have met him on a few occasions and was ABSOLUTELY impressed. I imagine that recruits (AND PARENTS) would be impressed with him as well. If Todd was anything like Jody Adams, there is no way in hell that the team would have rallied at the end of the year. Baseball is hard enough of a sport. Having a bully for a coach would make a team shut down. A quote from Ryan Tinkham about his respect for Todd (which I am sure the rest of the team holds) a few weeks ago dispels any ideas that Todd is an unlikable coach.

Again, time will tell whether Todd is successful or not, but I just don't understand why people are being so hateful towards him. As someone mentioned awhile back, it is not Todd's fault that Gene got fired, yet some are acting as if it was.

You completely misunderstood what I meant. Not once did I say that Todd is anything like Jody. What I said is that both Todd and Jody rub me the wrong way. I never said anything about their coaching styles, nor did I say they rub everybody the wrong way. I don't care for Jody as a coach, nor do I care for Todd as a coach. Meaning I'm not fans of them being at Wichita State.

Todd may turn out to be a good coach and turn the Shox around, and he may be a nice guy and have a good coaching style and have the respect of his players. My opinion won't change. I don't care to have him be the coach at WSU, and I just don't care for him in general. Has nothing to do with coaching style and it definitely has nothing to do with Gene. I am glad for what Gene accomplished here, but I don't feel that his heart really ever came back to Wichita once he accepted the OU job and then had a change of heart.

I think his time was up at WSU years ago and he certainly didn't help his cause with some of his actions off the field. That said he is and always will be WSU baseball. Chances are wsu baseball would be non-existent without him. I most certainly didn't like this time ended here, and I have absolutely no respect for our wannabe AD because of it (as well as other things). That being said, my opinion on Todd Butler is what it is. I'm not a fan of him. Maybe he can win me over in time, but not right now
