Lastly, any Valley team that beats us should be an upset. I don't expect to go 21-0 every year, but I at least want to gripe about 3-4 WSU players not being named first team. Now we really aren't any good.

Our program used to do this all the time. I want to see the program do it again.

You have pretty low expectations for the program then. If Stephenson was getting 500K for years upon years, you better believe the next coach is going to be compensated nicely starting out. I sure would hope the AD doesn't go after a cheap thrill hire. I would hope they would be going for the best possible candidate.

You can bash the school all you want. I can tell you this though. We are no Evansville or Bradley when it comes to baseball. Stop embarrassing yourself.
      Deuces Valley.
      ... No really, deuces.

Folks, this isn't about money, it's about direction.

This year's team was young. There are only 2 seniors. Next year's team looked very promising. This really didn't seem like the year to make the change. Although if the new coach can get everybody to come back it could still be a very good year.

So what are you thinking the the salary will be for the next coach? Will it break 300k?

It will be at the very top of what the coach commands in the marketplace.

I would be pretty excited about a Rob Walton/Mark Standiford combo as head coach/hitting coach. Coach Walton made about $108,000 at the end of his time at ORU (I am unaware of his current salary at OU).

How about the recruiting budget? or the operating budget? Will WSU finally decide to spend enough money on baseball to compete with the Kstate and Ku's of the world? Will WSU require the next coach to get 1/3 of the players from Kansas? Will they finally update the locker rooms? Will they try and improve the TV contract? I think these are all just as important as the coaches salary. WSU has proven they will pay a head coach a good salary. They haven't proven whether they will make the other necessary committments to the program. It is embarrassing that a school like kstate spends more on baseball than WSU. And for the long term good of the program they have to find a better conference (even if it is for baseball only).

Are these serious questions? You mean commitments like an top-10 stadium? Indoor practice facility? You mean things like those?

I'd like a forensic accountant to look at the KSU baseball budget. They aren't spending it on coaches and they aren't spending it on facilities, so I don't know where they are spending.

Baseball gets 11.7 scholarships. Do you think those four Kansas scholarship are holding the program back?

Actually they are spending some of it on coaches, their assistant coaches make more than WSU's. It is only the head coach that is paid less. They are also spending it on recruiting and operations. They have more out of state players, so the 11.7 does cost them more (they don't require 1/3 of their scholarship players to be from KS). They do also have an indoor practice facility that is 4 times bigger than WSUs (but that is because they have a football team- nothing to do with baseball I am sure, but they use it). I imagine if they continue to have a little bit of success they will pass WSU up in facilities as well. Right now the head coaches salary and a large stadium are the only areas where WSU has an advantage (tradition as well).

Top 10 stadium? WSU has a nice large stadium, but it hasn't been top 10 for over 10 years. It is more like top 50. There are a lot of schools that have built nice, new stadiums in the last 10 years. I wouldn't be surprised if KSU is one of them in a few years. WSU had the fourth best stadium in the Valley this past season (Cu, MSU, and Bradley played in bigger, newer and better stadiums).

Can you provide a link and/or list of the KSU coaches salary? Do you have other details about their budget. What is considered operations?

I would say a dedicated indoor facility might be better than one they share with the football program. I am sure we all know who gets dibs on that.

It's been discussed on here before, but does anyone have more insight to the 1/3 requirement? I've never heard Gene complain about that at anytime. I am sure if he didn't like it, he would have said so.

I would like to see proof of this. Not saying you are wrong, but it is rare indeed when an assistant makes 70%+ of the head coach's salary. That is what you are asserting given Hill's contract.

Someone posted a link to a detailed K-state atheltic budget on another thread last week. I was going by the information in that link. It was like 25 pages if I remember right.

I was pretty stunned by the information it it. K-state raised something like $67 million for athletics. It was pretty eye-opening information.

I will see if I can find the link. I do remember that Kstates 2 assistant baseball coaches made a total of $267,000 or something like that (2011). This year the 2 WSU assistant coaches made a total of $240,000. I would assume the Kstate coaches probably make a little more than that now.
