2024 Wichita State Baseball Transfers

It really makes you question wether or not its even worth caring anymore. Imagine if pro sports let guys be free agents every season. It would be a dumpster fire. If something doesnt change it really becomes pointless for small schools to foot the bill for atheltics. Fans dont want to show up to watch intramurals.

Intermural sports have better roster continuity and are closer to what college athletics should be vs this bastardized broken system we are being subjected to as fans.

Even when current college sports are remotely enjoyable (like this late season run), the season ends and we all take a 2x4 to the balls when the portal opens…. And then we are supposed to be excited about doing it all again?

Life is short and this mess is robbing all fans of valuable years of fandom and memories. It’s gross.

I will probably regret this statement but I think it is a good sign some of these guys are playing locally this summer.

I think we'll be ok in the field and at the plate. We're good at 3B, SS and options at 1B. Good C (need a backup), move Jordo to the outfield with Haworth and I like David Mauzy at CF. Serviceable, at minimum, at DH. Need a 2B and a backup C.

Obviously pitching is the issue, as it was this season. We were living on a hope and a prayer after Caden and Tommy.

Right now, I'd kill for a hope OR a prayer.

All things considered, Brady Hamilton was fantastic this season. Tyler Dobbs can be a serviceable midweek guy IF he can find a fastball above mid 80s and gain some control (certainly possible). I personally have high hopes for Jerry and Drew but it is mostly hope and untapped talent right now. I believe Jack Mount is better than most think, but he's not been tested beyond 1 inning for the most part. After that.....sheesh. Hope that Michael Mulhollon can come back healthy and find his potential. Hunter Holmes is the only short guy out of the pen that you can trust right now....and even HH had a 4.5 ERA....hardly a lock down arm. And at least right now, there's hardly a "Friday" guy in that list.

To my eyes, beyond that, and it's already wishful, is really out on a limb. We're bringing in about the 7th and 8th best pitchers for Crowder College. The kid that redshirted at ISUr, Gradin Taschner, at least has some projectables. His father got more than a cup of coffee in the bigs for San Fran and Gradin had a few good outings for some D2Juco outfit called Madison College before shutting it down in late March. He would be the 2nd guy we're probably counting on that hasn't been healthy or playing much for about 3 years. Then there's Tucker Russell for Highland Park Juco. 13 starts, nearly a 10 ERA and 3.00 WHIP. Walked twice as many as he struckout and a .317 opponents batting average. I see him with 2 options...they'll change his slot and he'll lead the country in appearances or he's here to help us improve at getting hit....he did lead his team with 13 HBP and added 11 WPs. I mean JFC. I think I still have availability. LHP, FB sits high 60s, low 70s. PerfectGame 1.3 rating....projecting as a probable beer league inning eater type. Can throw maybe one pitch for a strike, a modified Eephus pitch. I can spin it a little with different arm slots once I get warmed up (usually takes about a day and a half).

So, uh, is Pelfrey still interested in a pitching coach gig? That's pretty gross on the recruiting front.

Jc Dermody, LHP, DMACC

JC Dermody took to the mound early on in the first game slot of the day as DMACC took on Southwestern. Dermody is a lean and slender build with room to continue adding strength to the frame. He’s a southpaw who works from the wind-up, side-stepping before lifting the leg into a belt-high leg lift. He works down the mound, utilizing long levers in the upper half to create some whip as he works through release. He has a longer arm stroke with some looseness to it. He worked 85-87 mph on the fastball, with spin up to 2,238 RPMs, showing some run. He also showed a changeup in the 80-81 mph range, killing spin down to 1,365 RPMs with tons of depth to it. The changeup had a ton of arm-side tumble, which was a problem for the opposition. He also showed a mid-70s curveball in the mix that could get a little slurvy. It was a mostly fastball/changeup attack from the left-handed pitcher who worked away from right-handed hitters for success. Dermody went out and competed for the DMACC squad.

Good strikeout numbers as well as opponents batting average. ERA above 5 though and almost 6 in conference.

I agree, he's likely to see a ton of action.

I get Pelf as a player and the crush on him through his career but what do his stats say as a pitching coach at WSU? I just don’t get the desire there for him in that spot.

I was super excited about the potential of Pelfrey continuing under Green too; based on him landing Tolle, Candy-man, etc. But I think Claggett really evolved this season, and we should be patient and see what happens in this first full recruiting cycle under new leadership.

Pelf’s name would be able to pull better pitching prospects and did compared to what I am seeing right now. Mid level juco will not cut it. WSU was built on recruiting stud pitchers that were very good as freshman and if we can’t get studs on the mound we will never get over the hump.

In some aspects recruiting may just be really getting started if you are portal diving? If you are hunting freshmen or jucos, yeah, you should have already identified some but the portal is where a lot of the meat is at in this new era isn't it? I really don't know -- just asking.

100% Although, with collusion and tampering etc. a lot of the portal is done.

But yeah, in baseball, until they change the scholarship setup (and that is going to happen soon I believe) then high school recruiting is mostly done before Christmas junior year. Then juco recruiting and finally the portal.

I hope (and frankly expect) that we'll land a few portal guys in the next month or so, BUT, it's hard to see a bunch of portal guys being interested in the kind of culture HCBG has brought to the program.
