Gene will be back. He'll convince the AD that with the young guys we got now and the incoming class, he'll be granted one more year to see if he can turn things around. You can take that to the bank.

This must be how Saluki fans felt the last few years.

We know this is only going to get worse, but we can't afford to do anything about it.

Maybe Greg Marshall wants to be a two sport coach??? Atleast he can win a regualr season crown....

I expect that Gene will complete the final two years on his contract. Not sure what the succession plan is, if any. Perhaps the plan is to simply turn the keys over to Brent. There is really nothing to be pumped about regarding the state of Shocker baseball right now, with or with out sunshine.

We've talked about how much it would cost to fire Gene (buyout, etc.).

I am curious how much it is costing us not to fire him. Season ticket sales, concessions, etc. have to be going down the tubes fast. Next year and the year after will presumably only get worse from a revenue standpoint.

Pulling the trigger may not be as expensive as we think.

I just find it hard to believe that Gene will be fired outside of pulling a Bobby Petrino. His 35 years of building this program probably count for something, although he has done a few things over the years to diminish that. Ideally, we could get Gene to attend the Triple Rock Baptist Church and listen to a sermon by the Reverend Cleophus James and, if were lucky, he would finally see the light and do the right thing. Unfortunately, I doubt that we can get him there and even if we did not sure he would see the light.

30 years and 2 championships didn't give Denny Crum the right to hang on for perpetuity like a Supreme Court justice.

I'm appreciative for what Gene's done, but my loyalty lies to WSU (not to him). The minute that his interests and ours quit alligning is the same minute that I support going another direction. That minute came and went a while ago.

Plus I think his adulterous ski trip injury will keep him from doing any Jake Blues back handsprings at the reverend's service.

And in the off chance that Gene does get canned, tonight's opponent has a coach that has a pretty impressive resume'. Think he'd jump from DBU to WSU?

I have to wonder if Terry Elliot or Shane Dennis would have an interesting in coaching the Shox. In listening to them on the radio, it's obvious they both have great baseball minds. I'd have no problem with either of them running the program. Also gotta think about Mark Standiford. However we are jumping the gun, because we know the chances of Gene being gone within the next 2 years is slim to none, and I'm afraid slim just walked out the door.

To put in perspective how far the program has fallen:

LSU is averaging a higher attendance in Baseball than we did in Basketball.

Its time. Quit talking about next year or the year after. It is not going to happen!

While, I don't know if that claim is true, I'd say that reflects how (an)other program(s) have risen. There's a heck of a lot more competition out there than there used to be in the world of collegiate baseball. Also much of what used to be considered recruiting advantages are pretty much par for the course.

That said, Wichita State Baseball ain't what it used to be, but what did it used to be? In terms of getting guys in the program who had the baseball talent to make it as professionals, is WSU today that far off of it's historical pace?
I think Pringles original intention was to make tennis balls... but on the day the rubber was supposed to show up a truckload of potatoes came. Pringles is a laid-back company, so they just said, "**** it, cut em up!" - MH

a long, long time ago in a Galaxy far away the Shockers:

Won a National Championship (and was a threat to win again)
Was considered the Winnngest NCAA Division I program (now they are below 0.500 in the MVC)
7 CWS Appearances in 15 year period (They have not been to CWS in 15 years)
27 NCAA Appearances, where they had a streak of 14 appearances in row - Now they have not made it 2 in row, and probability it will be 3 years.

3 years in a row with no post season play combined with the lack of disclipline in the program - is that enough for the AD to make his first tough decision?
