"You're marginal", is a soft way of saying that you have talent, and you check some of the boxes we are looking for. In other words you're borderline what we're looking for but you are in jeopardy of being recruited over and cut in the future. In other, other words, you're probably Division 1 talent, but not quite the right fit for THIS program.

I’m loving everyone’s response to calling out HCEW for saying one thing and actually doing another with calling me soft. Again, these are 17-18 year old kids. First year of college. If you’re cutting them or taking their scholarship away, you don’t have to also personally degrade their skills too. Most of these kids have worked very hard, had other schools they could have chosen to invest in and have planned to be shockers for years. You all are so mesmerized with HCEW that you forget that it’s just blowing hot air to say one thing and act in a different manner. Guess none of you have ever had kids that worked hard for something.

Furthermore, how about this approach:

instead of: “you’re just not that good”, he could say “we don’t see you fitting in this program’s plans

instead of: “you’re not a champion”, he could say basically anything but this statement..... seriously

instead of: “you’re marginal at best” he could say “there are other guys in the program that we are choosing to go with and further develop.

All of you are intelligent people. Do you really think a good leader and cultural game changer talks to kids he has met for 30 days like this? Honestly? Even if he did feel that way, what was the point? It’s not about being soft, it’s about always understanding that how you treat people is bigger than the game.

nothing “happened to me” but I don’t think our school has handled this year well and I’m not going to be a blind band wagoner, sucking the teet of the new regime if they can’t be good representatives of the school. Lots of programs cut kids. They don’t also tear them down in the process. But like you said, you will never understand.

What's your idea of a good representative of the school? Someone that sugarcoats things and approaches 18 year olds as kids, or treats them like adults and talks to them like everyone in life will speak to them? Honestly, he probably could have not spoke to them at all. Loren could have handled it, I'm sure. This is a man who won manager of the year in the major league, and you are upset at how he spoke to 18 year old men?

Life is going to be very, very hard for you, young man. I agree with Doc. This has nothing to do with us being soft... I genuinely and worried about you. This grievance you hold is your own. We all heard what you had to say, and no one cares. This reminds me of the, "Should I spank my kids," debate -- those that say no (you), will never understand those that say yes (us).

If these kids are so offended by HCEW, tell them the best thing they can do is prove him wrong. If they had other offers, go spend a year at a JUCO and get picked up by another D1 team. There are avenues. Knowing HCEW's generation and men cut from the same cloth, I would wager a large amount of money he'd be the first one to congratulate anyone that proved him wrong.

This is the perfect example of the everybody deserves a participation trophy in our society today. Kids today are soft!!!! My son plays college basketball and is upset at his playing time. I told him to get better and work harder, not that his coach is too mean!

Let’s just say that these rumors are true. Wedge is cut from the same cloth as Gene. They’re looking for the player to show some fight and prove them wrong. Given my experience, that would be a relatively standard way for that conversation to go. I’ve had old teammates handle those types of situations a variety of ways, and the ones that fight seem to usually end up having good careers for the coaches that pushed them to that point.
