  • I remember when I got cut from my college football team. My coaches told me that I wasn’t good enough and they were wasting a scholarship on me. It hurt, but I appreciated their honesty. This was small college football, not big time baseball like WSU.

    • I think the funniest thing about all of this is that this guy said he had no relation to any player that was on or previously on the team. lol

Yet he knows the exact words used and is aware of a cell phone recording of one of the conversations... perhaps he and 1976 should get together for a drink?

It is obvious that there are a couple of people who have close relationships with either former players and/or families of former players. I think that one of them mentioned in a previous post, positive things about Gene S. and that he handled players better. It's been a while, but my memory of Gene is that he was a ruthless dictator to the players (his post game tirades were legendary), he demanded players to compete, and I'm sure that he is a supporter of what is currently happening regarding the baseball program and Eric Wedge.

“Ruthless dictator”? Hmmm, don’t think so, the majority of his players respected him. Don’t get me wrong, he was “crusty”, but a great leader and motivator of young men. Military (Vietnam vet IIRC) background.

            • I tell my high school students that while I may be a bit forgiving about certain things, the world will not care about their excuses. I guess I'm a mean teacher.

nothing “happened to me” but I don’t think our school has handled this year well and I’m not going to be a blind band wagoner, sucking the teet of the new regime if they can’t be good representatives of the school. Lots of programs cut kids. They don’t also tear them down in the process. But like you said, you will never understand.

have a great day..... don’t forget to wipe the kool-aid stain off your mouth

You said the majority of his players respected him. Ok I’ll buy that. He won a ton of games. For much of his tenure, he could play 80 games against Friends U. , Sterling, etc. and find ways for everyone to play. However, you didn’t talk about the players who didn’t like him. I knew a few who didn’t care for Gene. His post game tirades were legendary where he called players every name in the book and he had a few private meetings with players where that didn’t end well. The tone on his teams were of toughness and he didn’t care about hurt feelings. I’m not trying to tear down Gene. He was a great coach. My point was he was tough to play for, and he probably wasn’t much different from Hibbs or Wedge.

                    • Twenty-seven page thread on an early weekend series against some school called Northwestern State. Is that a leading indicator that we're back?

Got rid of the softy, kid gloves coach, replaced him with a black and yellow-blooded, light your ass on fire second cousin of Marshall but with MLB cred, coach. Is it a great day to be a Shocker?

                      Edit: derp.

Why would you suggest I should meet with him? If I met him I could buy him a soft drink as I don't drink or encourage the consumption of alcohol.

Figure of speech. And we currently have two posters who seem to have some serious issues with the personalities of our baseball and men’s basketball coaches. Figured you two could have quite a bit in common.

OK, thanks for your explanation; please be advised while I personally don't care for Marshall's petulant, spoiled attitude, my desire is for him to retire at age 60.

I pray the AD will have established a smooth departure for Marshall and have identified a young, successful Head Coach (like Bob Richey) with the coaching skill set necessary to take the Shockers to a National Championship before I die.

Bob Richey does not get the WSU coaching gig. Try someone that’s actually made the NCAA tournament, please.

I already had to ban myself from the basketball forum. Keep that trash from ruining this forum too.
